Required reading for anyone who likes money,

This review is from: Investing For Dummies, Fifth edition (Paperback)
My brother has his MBA, pasted his Series 7 and is currently working in "finical planning" field. He knew that I was trying to make the best out of my savings and investments (IRA, money market, etc) so he bought me this book for my birthday this year. I have just completed this book and I have to say I am very impressed. "For Dummies..." books are usually pretty solid with regards to content and information, this book isn't an exception.
Eric Tyson is the author of this book and he provides very pragmatic insight on the world of investing. Tyson uses his professional experience, as well as explaining the complex world that is "investing your dollar under the U.S.A."! The fifth edition was published at the end of last year (2008), when economy in America really became crucial in the public opinion. Many people lost thousands (like me) and millions of dollars. Not to mention that the economy became a big "selling point" for the 2008 Presidential election. This book also touches on buying/selling real estate, buying/selling a business, investing in stocks, bond, mutual funds, taxes and many other topics. Another thing that Tyson provides is "what not to do" with money and/or investments. Many times a non-example is more powerful than a basic example. Tyson also has the ability to keep the information grounded and cuts through a lot of the jargon, with sliding in bits of humor here and there. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about money and perhaps making more of it (who doesn't want more money?). I had several finical funds before I read this book (and still do), but after reading this book I have a better understanding how and when I will use the money I am saving/investing.

Informative book for beginners,

This book is very helpful from a high-level standpoint. As a person inexperienced with investing, it helped me to understand my options. I would recommend this book for anyone starting out. However, I think more detailed books are necessary to best understand specific subject matters discussed in this book.

Simple, to the point,
This review is from: Investing For Dummies, Fifth edition (Paperback)
A very straight forward book. General summary not so many specifics but exactly what it is intended for. Gives a broad explanation of all aspects of investment and a very good start up guide for people who do not plan on what to do with money. Thumbs up!

Investing for Dummies does it's name justice. It provides a very detailed yet elementary description that I could easily understand. If you are looking for 101 type information and are clueless as where to start, this is a great place

Its a very good book for beginners and I recommended it to everyone I know who doesn't know where to start when they want to invest. This is a good book as a guideline and you can skim through chapters without being lost. You can read whatever part of investing you are more interested in. It provides good tips and things you should know and read up on before investing. This book talks about stocks and bonds, real estate, margin loans, diversifying stocks and etc. long term gains and short term gain and how to reduce tax's with certain pointers and investing in things the safe way and the smart way. The author creditability is also good so he knows what he is talking about. Definetely a pick up if you know nothing at all about investing.

Great Starting Point,

This review is from: Investing For Dummies, Fifth edition (Paperback)
This book offers an excellent overview on several types of investing, as well as lot's of information on where you can find out more about any given subject. Tyson comes at the difficult subject of explaining the vastly varied subject of investing from an easy to understand, well organized, and most importantly, well documented point of view. Every single assertion in this book is backed by facts - graphics of investment returns, several examples, articles, etc. If Tyson provides an opinion, he makes sure that you know it is his opinion, and why he is making it.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a sound overview of investing. However, those buying this book should understand that investing is a complex and vast subject, and this book does not cover all the minute details of each and every investment type. I suggest starting with this book, and then picking up other books (by Tyson or otherwise) that detail more about the type of investments (real estate, stocks, small business, mutual funds, etc) that interest you the most.

Ordered this book for help trying to diversify and save for childrens college. It answeres most questions, but felt like I still needed to run things by a professional before diving in.

My title says it all! The book is a little too basic but then again, I should have realized that given the title! If you have ever had even some exposure to investing, find something at the next level. It would be a better investment! :)

Good First Port of Call,
This review is from: Investing For Dummies, Fifth edition (Paperback)
This is a good place to start if you're interested in investing but don't know much jargon or terms. It goes through subjects like investor psychology, as well as explaining the various types of investments and the risks associated with them. It is clear to read and very understandable. This would be a perfect launch-pad to other books about investing and a great way to further your knowledge about what can be a confusing topic.
Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Rational and surprisingly comprehensive,
This review is from: Investing For Dummies (Kindle Edition)
This was by many standards a very good book. Educational, informative and no nonsense through and through. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to get a basic overview of how to plan investments in all aspects of life, from securities to home purchase to entrepreneurship. It is sobering.
It is, however, directed at an American audience, so the rather large parts on taxes etc. were of little value to me as an European reader and I also doubt that I - again as an European - should put 50% of my investment capital into American securities. |
