Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Perhaps the Internet's most important impact is the way it eliminates distance, allowing us to span the globe with a mouse click. For global investors, the Net offers a wealth of information on foreign economies and markets. This is the special focus of Investing Online by Stephen Eckett, who has traded futures and derivatives in London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Like other books, this one covers all the major U.S. financial Web sites, but it also includes a directory of sites in 44 other nations. Here's where to go to check the price of a stock on the Thailand stock exchange or to find out the unemployment rate in Sweden. Eckett offers some thoughtful musings on the long-term impact of the Internet on how we will invest in the future. Among other things, he believes the boundary between investment and gambling will blur, then disappear completely. We'll sell gold short and bet on the World Cup from the same computer screen. --Barry Mitzman

Review

By far the best book on investing for the internet investor. Packed full of useful information and tips. -- Business Age Magazine, 2/98

Eckett's work is the latest of several recent books on how to take advantage of the Internet to help with investing. Previous book have emphasized immediacy and currency, but Eckett also stresses the global capability of the Internet and targets those with an interest in international investing. In addition, the author, a managing director of Britain's Numa Financial Systems, covers a variety of investment vehicles. His comprehensive guide is divided into three section. The first one provides thorough background information on the internet itself. The second identifies financial information resources available on the Internet and explains how to search the Internet for them; there is also a warning about "cyberscams." The final section consists of an exhaustive directory of more than 1,200 Web sites from 45 countries that feature economic, financial, and investment information. A glossary of technical terms and appendixes listing software programs, ticker symbols, market indexes, etc., are included. -- Booklist, May 1997

Seventy bucks for a paperback book? Unbelievable, but true-and worth every penny of it. That's Investing Online by Stephen Eckett. In 560 pages, he covers everything investors are likely to need in using the Internet for both research and actually buying and selling stocks and bonds, even financial derivatives. The book is well laid out with plenty of illustrations. But it is its straightforward, jargon-free English that makes it a winner. It's too heavy to take travelling, but don't stay at home without it. -- Toronto Computes, 11/97

The primary purpose of "Investing Online" is to give those who know and love the Web, but are somewhat hesitant when it comes to the world of finance and investments, a navigational guide through Wall Street, the futures market, bonds, currency trading, mutual funds and stock option. In addition to detailed information about Web sites and what they contain, Eckett grades them and tell readers how to judge the value of each one. -- Daily Citizen News, May 1998

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, comprehensive and well-written, June 19, 1998

A fantasic book. The first book I've come across that treats the online financial world as truly international (life beyond the NYSE!). Good section on choosing an online broker. The directory of investment web sites at the back of the book is very comprehensive, and the rating system is useful.
