This is a good beginner's book, but in the investment world, information changes quickly. The book promises on the front and back covers, and inside as well, to provide additional and updated information online at Dummies.com. but when you type in the web address printed in the book all you get is "Page Not Found."

The author starts out by building confidence in investing on-line. His eleven Getting Started points (Decide how much you can save and invest, Master the terms, Understand the difference between being an active and passive investor, etc.) set the tone for the entire book. He assumes you have never invested on-line and then shows you exactly how to do it. Not only does he explain how to invest at your computer but he also explains basic terminology (selling stock short, buying a call in options, shareholders' equity, etc.) so that you are never lost in his explanations. Thankfully, he reserves the deeper topics (Capital-gain distribution nightmare, stock splits, etc.) for the gray sidebars. The hundreds of internet addresses he provides are enough to fill anyone's bookmarks. This is the kind of book you read with your laptop so that you can check out the references and bookmark those which have meaning to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're only a Dummy if you don't check out this book!, October 30, 2008
This review is from: Investing Online For Dummies (Paperback)
I don't know how thorough or concise the first 5 editions of this resource were, but I can tell you this edition is both. I have just recently begun educating myself on the market, and started with the most recommended texts about - or by - Buffett, Lynch, Graham and others. I read the Complete Idiot's Guide to Investing that was informative. But nothing I've read thus far puts so much useful, understandable and resourceful information at your fingertips. Like the reviewer above states, there are HUNDREDS of viable links to largely free sites that cover the full spectrum of investing; from terminology and fundamental/technical analysis, to screeners, analyst ratings, quant models, governance, taxation and how to avoid scams. As mentioned, have your computer close by to bookmark these invaluable resources. Three additional chapters to the book - available online - pick up where the book left off with more advanced concepts and strategies. I can't recommend this text highly enough.

I started out on computers 15 years ago and loved the Dummies books. They made learning fun.
I have now moved into investing and enjoyed the cutting edge articles I read in this book. Much reading and learning is required in stock investing in order to prepare oneself for stepping onto Wall Street. This new 2008 edition of Online Investing is a big help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, July 17, 2009

I bought this book a few months back, and recently decided to get into investing online. I think it's a great book, very informative. I constantly refer to it to make sure I'm doing things right. If you're wanting to start investing online, check this book out. I'm a former US Marine Infantryman, so if I can understand it, a 5 year old can! Not too much fancy talk in there, so it's easy to follow. They should rename the book to "Investing Online for DUMMIES and MARINES".

All joking aside, if you want a good "starter" book, check this book out. Like I said, I recently decided to actually invest, and I'm enjoying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Useful, Informative and excellent introduction to investing, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Investing Online For Dummies (Paperback)
I recently purchased this book and am very pleased with it. It is surprisingly good, comprehensive and detailed. It lists a host of useful online websites for all types of research and analysis. The book didn't elaborate much on market timing and specifically when to buy and sell and didn't speak at length about signal indicators. Still, it's an excellent book and I don't see why any beginning investor wouldn't be very pleased with it. It is written in a clear and interesting way and packed with information. It talks about fundamental and technical analysis and give overviews of trading with stocks, bonds, mutual funds and options(though the book mainly focuses on stocks). A very informative and educational book for the beginning to intermediate investor. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics - a great intro., September 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Investing Online For Dummies (Paperback)
As the author suggests, this is a primer that intends to give the reader the necessary information to invest online. While there may have been a couple of empty references (where the author says "see Chapter 3" and there is nothing there), this writer isn't the first to do this in a "Dummies" book nor will he be the last. It is a nice mix of professional insights and resources (websites or books where we can delve deeper into a specific issue). This books does not pretend to be the end-all but a basic resource that I use from time-to-time to refresh or get some advice. Overall this is a great reference, and like most "Dummies" is a nice combo of humor and intellect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Information you didn't even know you needed, February 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Prior to reading this book I had done a fair bit of research into online brokers and having studied economics & accounting at university and worked in the fund management industry several years ago thought I had most of it covered. I was wrong. The thing about the internet is that all the information you need is there but if you don't know what you are looking for you won't find it. That is where this book excels. It tells you what you should be looking for AND points you in right direction to find further information as well as the tools you need for investing. Topics covered include; tracking your investments for performance results and tax purposes, the brokers and account types out there, analysis into the general workings of the stock market, asset allocation, stock screening tools, insider trading monitoring and a host of other tools and topics. The thing I really like about this book is that most of these books are written by people who have a financial interest in advising people or work for companies that do. Matt Krantz works for USA Today, yet despite the information and tools it offers, you never felt he was pushing you towards his companies site over any other. In fact if USA Today was mentioned at all, it was always after a number of other online resources which I liked.

The title says it all. The best part about this book is the web resources that it lists. Well worth the money.
