Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Megatrends are large social, economic, or political changes that are slow to form—however, once in place, their influence can last decades. Demographics are a type of megatrend, and even though these trends are somewhat easy to spot, few, if any, investors focus enough on demographic trends as they make their investment decisions.

During his investment career, Dr. Bob Froehlich has had the opportunity to travel the globe. He has witnessed firsthand the evolving demographic changes taking place around the world. These unique demographic trends can create investment opportunities, if you understand the link between demographics and investments.

There are hundreds of demographic trends developing around the world, and Investment Megatrends explains the dramatic power and influence of these demographic trends on the world of investments. From identifying four prominent global shifts to presenting the number-crunching behind the reasons for their existence, this book provides you with a map of the pitfalls and opportunities of demographic data, what to look for, and where. Froehlich offers practical investment strategies and ideas you can implement to benefit from these major demographic shifts:

  • Global Shift #1: The Ponce de Leon Effect: Focusing on the American Baby Boomers
  • Global Shift #2: The Walls Keep on Tumbling Down: Focusing on Eastern European Workers
  • Global Shift #3: The Rising Sun Is Clearly Setting: Focusing on the Aging Japanese Population
  • Global Shift #4: Napoleon Was Right: Focusing on the Chinese Consumer Generation

Investment Megatrends concludes with a detailed discussion of how you can develop an Investment Megatrend Portfolio over the next ten years.

Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, Investment Megatrends can help serious investors profit—today and tomorrow—from some of the most important global demographic shifts of our lifetime.

"The error-prone strategists and economists make the mistake of believing that the future will unfold just like the past. There are others, however, who have eyes to see the dust in the distance, ears to hear the hoof beats of the thundering herd, and the noses to smell the money to be made. One of those is Dr. Bob."—Chicago Tribune

3.0 out of 5 stars Trend Analysis of value Stock selections weak effort, March 17, 2006

Most investors probably have a feel for the megatrends discussed. It was comforting to hear from such a successful pundit that the trends are intact. Offering stock choices that will benefit from the megatrends offered minimal value to this reader. My general feel is the the author didn't try very hard and was cashing in on his reputation. I would not recommend the book and have not shared it with fellow investors.

buying this book is bad investment, demorgrapics says people are growing old, so buy cannon because the old people will buy its cameras to take photos of their grandchildren, what kind of logic is that? is it a safer bet to buy companies making adult diapers?

2.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster attempt by prolific writer & speaker, April 23, 2006

This review is from: Investment Megatrends (Hardcover)
Dr. Froehlich's uninspiring book on global megatrends leaves much to be desired by the initiated trader and investor. First of all, as I have to agree with the previous post, most of the megatrends here are very well circulated (with the exception of the aging of the Japanese population) in the media, so it is not like the author is describing ground-breaking trends.

Furthermore, the stocks that he recommends for his "MegaTrend Portfolio" left me with the feeling that the author spent little time in researching new and innovative ideas. He merely came up with names that most traders/investors are familiar with and that are wide enough in scope to fulfill his view on a megatrend.

Bottom line, the book gives a sense to the reader that it is clearly written to the Kiplinger's Personal Finance & Money Magazine set, with almost no regard to the professional. As a suggestion, the author should have classifed his "Megatrend Portfolio" in various classes based on sophistication and risk tolerance, i.e. low risk, moderate risk and high/aggressive risk. This would have been a good showing by the author to address the myriad levels of sophistication of his readers.
