Malevolent Creation is a band that has endured countless line-up changes. The one member on every album, Phil Fasciana has an admirable work ethic...even if the results are sub-par. They are an underrated and unfortunately overlooked death metal band of the early 90s from original hotbed of death metal: the Sunshine State of Florida. The 2000s have not yet been a good decade for the band. The last effort, `Doomsday X' started out promising, but was mired by poorly written songs performed with about as much zest as a non-alcoholic beer. The production was not very good for that album either. The prior efforts with Kyle Simmons were pretty lackluster as well. The last great Malevolent Creation between 1998 and now is the 2000 effort `Envenomed'. When singer Brett Hoffman touted that on this new album "[we're] going to push ourselves to limit, playing faster and heavy than ever before", I kind of doubted him. Happily, I turned out to be very wrong.

`Invidious Dominion' is about as subtle as a 350lbs man drop kicking you in the chest. This effort finds the band in a more stripped down format. Gone are the songs that drag on forever with some boring solo and some equally boring blast-beats thrown in intermittently. The songs have simple, catchy and effective riffs. The opener `United Hatred' showcases the talent the band has to offer -which is a lot! The song blasts past you with such a ferocity it challenges the numbers on `Envenomed'. Hell, even the songs on `Retribution' and `Ten Commandments' are put on the mantle with this flawless number. The song has the elements that make `Dominion' such a treat: great riffs, tons of groove, shorter songs. `Slaughter House' has the same kind of head banging groove to it that `Coronation of Our Domain' has.

Malevolent Creation needed a decent album. This is it. Classic Florida Death Metal played with fire, and mixed well to boot. Remember Warkult with the over compressed?limited everything, and DoomsdayX lame mix? This album fixes all that.

As usual, a heavy, heavy release from Malevolent Creation. Phil's riffs sound like trademark Malevolent, and the tracks he wrote, United Hate, Slaughter House, Lead Spitter, Target Rich Environment, Antagonized, and Born Again Hard, are easily my favorites on the album. The others are good songs, but I think Fasciana's stand out. With one exception, though; the title track was written by the drummer, and it's a crusher. This CD has grown on me from the first few listens, as I first thought it deserved four stars. But each song on the album is distinct and memorable, and the brutality of this band is unmatched. Plus, Brett's vocals sound vicious as he turns in an impressive performance. In my opinion, you definitely have to have some Malevolent Creation if you're a fan of traditional, breakneck death metal.

you can't knock this band..their first 2 albums are classics in the genre. for 23 years, they've been releasing solid, quality death metal. once the novelty and excitement of this new album wears off, though, we are left with what really is Envenomed part 2. fast? check! brutal? check! cool artwork and lyrics? check! and therein lies the problem..this is predictable malevolent creation doing what they do best. nothing wrong with that. hardly an essential album to own from their catalogue. who knows how much longer they'll be around though..so, in the meantime..hit play and enjoy the ride.
