In Michael Link's Inviolate, he explores a prevalent issue that pervades our society: sexual abuse and the damage caused, both from a victim's standpoint and from the standpoint of the falsely accused. Inviolate reminds us that sexual predators hide among us, concealing their true identities and perversions while they cause a great deal of emotional damage to their victims. It also reminds us of the detrimental nature of false accusations of sexual abuse, which, even once they are technically resolved, can never be fully resolved, having permanently damaged lives and reputations. Link reminds us not to always trust those who seem trustworthy, as one man hides his pedophilia from his community and another child maligns the name of an innocent man. This novel is an excellent treatment of all forms of sexual indecency, both in the adults who prey on innocent young children like Connie and the equally inappropriate and shocking sexuality of twelve-year old Tiffany. Through both Connie and Tiffany, we are reminded that children are often forced to grow up too fast and lose their innocence at too young of an age, whether it is stolen from them by a sexual predator or by their environment and upbringing.

Michael Link's Inviolate details the journey of an 8th grader, Connie, who is raped on her way home from a Halloween party. While the rape is brutal, Link presents an interesting perspective through the child's trauma counsellor, who explains to her that while her physical virginity has been taken from her, her innocence and spiritual virginity have remained intact for the man with whom she chooses to share them with. The story follows the life of Connie into adulthood, when another question of sexual indiscretion and question of paedophilia presents itself when a co-worker is falsely accused of molesting a child. Inviolate presents the regrettable disparity between the punishment for the guilty and the innocent, as many predators are left free to roam the streets and cause harm, while reputations of the innocent are slandered and ruined through unfounded accusations and legal battles, leaving irreparable damages.

No one really wants to believe that sexual assault exists, but unfortunately, it is all too real. In his novel, Inviolate, Michael Link addresses the issue head first. When you think about sexual assault, you may think the actual violating act is the worst part. But this book, through fictional characters, shows that the scars that remain after the act can be even worse, and they can stick around forever. It can be hard for an author to write a fictional piece with a message, but Link does just that with elegance and grace. His writing draws you into the families involved and makes you feel as if you are a neighbor or friend instead of just a random reader. The author not only keeps readers interested in the plot, but he also teaches the many causes of molestation along with the long term effects. This book is entertaining, educational, and important.
