4.0 out of 5 stars laswell in ambient mode

Bill Laswell in solo mood; the pieces contained here are primarily bass textures with occasional percussive accompaniment. Deep sonorous journeys into the soul of the bass. 3.0 out of 5 stars Beware when buying this!
I bought this album in the store and it turns out the music on the CD (this is corroborated by other people on the 'net) is NOT the music you hear in the samples! It's straight-ahead bop jazz... pretty good, but definitely not Bill Laswell.

4.0 out of 5 stars laswell in ambient mode, October 23, 1999

Bill Laswell in solo mood; the pieces contained here are primarily bass textures with occasional percussive accompaniment. Deep sonorous journeys into the soul of the bass. Unsettling at times, cold and alienating, Laswell is a visitor to dark worlds. Quite slow, at times atonal, there are musical references to Russell Mills' Undark, a sample of which is perhaps covered on Night Air and Low Frequency. I'm quite fond of Laswell's works especially since he covers such a vast array of musical territories; his prolific output is too large to keep up with. I doubt if this recording will set the world on fire; certainly it has copped some flak from radio listeners along the lines of Laswell turns this sort of stuff out by the bucket loads etc. To a degree I have to agree, but it's always interesting to hear what he's up to. You get used to hearing him play in any number of combinations or being just another fine player in an all star line up, else acting as producer, so that when a solo venture comes along, the ears prick up. One thing is for certain, respect is called for when it comes to Mr Laswell. If you have not heard Laswell before don't be put off by this. Maybe listen to it after you have heard and been turned on by other projects. It all falls into place eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful instrumental album, September 5, 2002
This review is from: Invisible Design (Audio CD)
I own over 600 compact discs, and this is easily in the top ten. It feels ambient at first, but as you listen more you notice that Laswell carefully composed these patient songs. The bass tone is haunting, about as far from funk bass as you can get. The best track is "Aisha"

4.0 out of 5 stars bass solo extraordinaire, October 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Invisible Design (Audio CD)
The other reviewers are correct; this is a thoughtful bass solo effort, not bop jazz. The many voices of the bass guitar as realized by Laswell, with a touch of percussion here and there. Perhaps just a touch more easily digestable that expected but still very thoughtful; great for background or close listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-composed, another Laswell triumph, September 16, 1999
By A Customer

Any fan of Laswell's prior work with Sacred System or recent Material will like this. If you get what sounds like straight-ahead bop jazz (nine tracks vs. seven on this album) you have a disc which was pressed in error. Contact Tzadik for a replacement.

4.0 out of 5 stars ambient + bass soundscapes, January 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Invisible Design (Audio CD)
there's almost always something worthwhile in any laswell project including this one. it is a mixture of his bass, electronic percussion & more ambient elements. sort of a cross between his playing on "dreamspeed" & one his (too) many ambient releases. i like this cd but if you're expecting alot of his aggressive bass playing you'll be disappointed, he's a bit subdued this time out.

This cd is not a jazz bop cd it is a solo cd for bass guitar and is quite beautiful. Bill Laswell is in top form in this new solo recording. Any Laswell fan would be pleased with this cd. I would just like to thank John Zorn and Tzadik for putting out such a great cd. You must buy this cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars In my top 3 Laswell albums, April 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Invisible Design (Audio CD)
This is an uncharacteristic album for Bill. He's by himself and he's not going full-throttle with the usual dub licks or Painkiller-esque lightning fingers. It's a very mellow album for the most part and only "Black Ether" picks up the pace. It's ambient music done intelligently and all of the music, while not mind-numbingly intricate or incredibly technical, has such a personal feel to it that I fell in love with it after the first listen. Strict dub fans and people who require extreme technicality might want to steer clear, but if mellow bass tracks sound good to anyone get this! I have ID2, but haven't listened yet--I hear it's a bit more uptempo than 1.

4.0 out of 5 stars Designs by Bass, December 2, 2008
This review is from: Invisible Design (Audio CD)
The seven selections range from 4:21 to 9:47 and highlight the vision of Bill Laswell in a jazz-styled setting to express his ambient artistry.

With minimal percussion to accentuate the textures, Laswell creates quiet - but highly expressive - soundscapes that demonstrate the potential of the bass as a solo instrument. The designs created provide rich colors to the mind and soul.
