I've been an intermittent paw-wax user for a long time, most recently converted to Musher's Secret. I do not live in a snow-belt region so this is primarily for surface-contact protection rather than preventing inter-pad snow buildup.

The stuff is awesome, however I have two caveats:

1) Use a latex or nitrile rubber glove when applying it. ... Unless of course you intend to wax your paws as well. :-) This also lets you use it sparingly while still working it thoroughly into the paw pad and inter-pad fur.

2) If you are putting this stuff on a mixed-location dog (indoors + walks or indoors + outdoors), put it on at the front door on your way out, otherwise the non-absorbed fraction leaves warm waxy paw-prints all over indoor surfaces.

I live in Northern Michigan and have three dogs, two of them with arthritis and hip & joint problems. Before I found Musher's Secret, I would have to carry my dogs to their "potty spot" in the backyard, through all the snow, and then carry them back in--the pads of their paws and their feet would hurt so much, they couldn't walk back in on their own.

I've tried dog boots, homemade boot concoctions and even had winter boots made for my dogs, all to no avail. They either slipped off as soon as I put them on or didn't do any good and my dogs feet STILL hurt them.

Musher's Secret, though, has been a blessing. I apply it daily to my two older dogs and to my poodle and it's made SUCH a difference. We still can't leave them out too long in the winter weather, but I don't worry about their feet or their pads hurting, splitting, getting (pet safe) ice melter/salt in their pads or between their toes.

I recommend Musher's Secret to EVERY dog owner and I'm looking forward to using it this summer when we take our dogs on walks on the city sidewalks--it's great for hot or cold weather, and we LOVE it.

I have a German Shepherd dog and I use Musher's Secret on his paws during the winter so that the salt and ice do not hurt them. He used to spend a lot of time licking his paws before I got this and now he doesn't do it as much when it snows (although he seems to like licking the Musher's Secret from his paws when I've just put it on) and he doesn't do it at all in normal weather. His paws tend to get worn and this product helps soothe and protect them. You don't have to use a lot either, so it lasts a long time. Thank you Musher's Secret for my baby's happy feet!

I can't decide between 4 & 5 stars ... I was recently accused of giving too many 5 star ratings from someone who didn't like a product that I did ... the thing is, I research what I buy before buying it, from all your reviews ... and so maybe I expect good outcomes & so my ratings are swayed ... but this product seems to do all that it is supposed to, protecting my dog's feet, it was easy to put on, didn't make a mess, and claims to be natural & safe ... so why would I give it a 4-star, except to proove that i don't only give out 5-star reviews ... so, another 5-star review:

I used a plastic baggie to apply it to my dog's feet
- and it went on easily, no problem with smell
- she didn't try to lick it off, my floors were fine -

We have used virgin coconut oil up to recently but this winter has been strange - the ground isn't frozen yet and the pastures are wet & when they walk through the wet and then back onto the frozen snow, especially on really cold days, their paws get iceballs between their pads as well as between their pad & nail - she did much better with this musher's wax - I feel comfortable that she didn't have a reaction & her feet seemed to be fine after use -

I started using virgin coconut oil when we spent a lot of time hiking in hemlock forests and the gum from the trees stuck to their pads & irritated them ... I'll let you know how it works next time we hike in that forest.

By the way, the virgin coconut is very messy & the dogs LOVE it and just want to eat it first chance they get ...

Take care!

Okay, I just had to write this review because I skimmed through a few reviews that said it "helped against some issues with salt but didn't protect them from frostbite."

Um, okay, not to sound sarcastic but this IS a paw salve, not a magic bubble that is going to totally insulate your dog's paws from all of the elements. This is coming from someone who has a dog who ABSOLUTELY freaks out when you put anything boot or shoe-related on her feet and lives in Chicago where we have horrible cold winters with a lot of snow, ice, salt, etc.

That said, it does definitely seem to help with a lot of the discomfort she feels when we're walking outside in the cold. It doesn't seem to leave any film behind even right after I put it on, and I usually only have to put it on about once a week - and that's after washing her paws after we return from our walks to get rid of any salt that may be stuck between her toes. That was also a HUGE help in alleviating some of her discomfort, and something I recommend for those living in areas where salt is used a lot.

(It's also helpful in the spring and summertime when I know people use pesticides and chemicals on their lawns that she inevitably walks over. Dogs paws are magnets for all kinds of nasty things and I'd much rather clean them off for her than have her sit there and ingest unknown toxins into her body)

Unfortunately, until I can get her nails trimmed short enough to try the disposable booties there is just some weather that is too cold for her to walk in. I live in apartment and own a pretty big active dog so our walks are SUPER important for both of our sakes, but when it's really cold and/or inclement weather she just starts to limp once we've been out there a few minutes.
