Jonathan Littell was born in 1967 in New York of American parents and brought up and educated mainly in France. His novel The Kindly Ones, originally published in France as Les Bienveillantes, became a bestseller and won the coveted Prix Goncourt and the Académie Française's Prix de Littérature. Previously he worked for the humanitarian agency, Action contre la faim, in Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He now lives in Spain.

This short work, which reads like a feature magazine article, describes the continuing violence perpetrated by the Lord's Resistance Army in several central African countries. I was amazed when it was revealed how few of them are estimated to be left, given the amount of havoc they continue to wreak. It was eye-opening but not as terrifying as I expected given the Amazon.com review that appears with the product description. The reporter talked to members of the armies trying to rout the LRA and to some of its escaped victims, but he didn't really help me understand what the conflict is about or why the LRA continues to fight when it's obvious their days are numbered.
So, this was like a magazine article, but without the visuals and the maps that would normally accompany a piece like this. After a while, the names of towns and villages just started to jumble together. There were a few sidebar-like paragraphs about the history of the LRA and a guide to the acronyms used, but unfortunately these helpful tidbits were at the end of the article instead of the beginning where they could have done some good.

Although the author does a good job of summarizing the problem, the issue with this single is that he stops there. All the information presented in this single can easily be obtained by reading a few NYT articles on the LRA. This single would be much more enticing if the author included some sort of analysis, or spoke more about his journey to the DRC.
All in all, it doesn't seem worth spending $2 on it.

In this short piece, Jonathan Litell is able to capture the devastation in the Congo. Early on, he states it is easy to push aside what is happening in this part of the world and discard it as, "just another war in Africa." Until we are able to mentally see ourselves, our families, and our friends in these people and what would be the inevitable destabilization and destruction of our society, the situation in the Congo will not end.
