From Publishers Weekly

Milani, a veterinarian and author of The Weekend Dog, emphasizes the importance of communication in dog-training. The key is that owners understand that dogs perceive the world differently from people and have completely foreign behavior patterns. Once that is understood, notes Milani, owners will perceive how their own behavior may unwittingly have a negative effect on their pets, and they can modify their actions to obtain excellent results in training. Milani explains how an owner's misinterpretation of a pet's activities can also create training blocks. The author describes the way dogs' senses differ from those of people (their hearing and sense of smell are more acute than ours; their sight, on the other hand, is far inferior) and she offers case studies that depict typical pet problems (chewing on treasured objects, snapping at strangers, etc.) with step-by-step training advice that stresses reinforcing positive and countering negative behavior without punishment. This is a sensible, informed approach to dog-training. November 19

From Library Journal

Milani offers good, sensible advice on how to cope with dog behavior prob lems. She presents suggestions for han dling such basic situations as house breaking and problems like fear biting and destructiveness. Milani empha sizes the need to analyze each problem: When does it occur? What are the pos sible explanations? One must under stand both what is being communciated to the dog and what the dog is commu nicating if the animal is to be trained properly. Milani's promotion of love and confidence as vital components in the relationship between dog and mas ter gives her book a warm tone that pet owners will appreciate. A good choice for public libraries. Susan Matusak, Wilson Coll. Lib., Chambersburg, Pa.

This review is from: The Invisible Leash (Hardcover)
This book,The Invisible Leash, published in 1985, subtitle " A better way to communicate with your dog" was selected by my wife and I for presentation to our obedience training leader at graduation evening following our eight week course. Though 25 years old this first edition, with its dust jacket, was in near perfect condition ( just as the book seller had indicated) and had been promptly mailed (USPS) arriving on the day of graduation of our six month old Standard Poodle.

The " Invisible Leash" written by a veterinarian over a generation earlier, stressed the same points as our obedience trainer and was sincerely appreciated by our instructor who was a teenager in 1985. Our thanks to the book seller for the the high quality and expeditious handling of our purchase.
