CGT's "Invitation" A Must-Hear for Guitar Lovers,
By martin andrews (Michigan USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Invitation (Audio CD)
This is your "Invitation" to sample some excellent acoustic guitar output from Robert Fripp's progeny. It's no accident "Invitation" is a joy to hear; the Trio are grads of Fripp's unique discipline of guitar schooling and RF himself is in the producer's chair. Those who know The League Of Crafty Guitarists or other 1990's non-King Crimson projects Robert Fripp was in on will find familiar faces and styles on "Invitation". As expected, the acoustic guitar is classy and played masterfully; the Trio executes complex and precise musical ideas utterly artfully. The CD walks through several musical flavors these ex-League members brought into the Trio... "Train to Lamy" is a suite in five parts which makes thematic appearances throughout the CD. At times it will have you tappin' yer toes, but when it pulls away from the station you'll realize you're not ready for it to go... "Punta Patri", "Apache", and "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" are some of the more solid musical ideas with melodies you'll remember effortlessly, whereas "Fratres", "Above the Clouds", and "Prelude Circulation" feature a calming, ambient style. Finally, "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" is a brilliant arrangement of the familiar J.S. Bach piece that will simply dazzle you. If you haven't heard Robert Fripp's "League" members, "Invitation" is an excellent place to start. Old-school "League" lovers this "Invitation" is for you too. MA

INCREDIBLE!,

Simply put: a masterpiece. I wouldn't believe they sounded this good if I hadn't seen them open for King Crimson, and again when they came to Portland. They brought the house to their feet both times! This band is a rare jewel. I've got all their CDs and each one is great, but this one is the best. Trust me, buy it.

Brillant, Masterful,

Protégés of Robert Fripp, CGT expands out of their comfort zone on this one to push their technical expertise to the limit. Any group that can successful put Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in C# Minor" onto 3 acoustic guitars has got to be special - but then they move to a western style on "Train" and an incredibly rocking "Good, Bad, and Ugly". But the true gem is "Up in the Clouds" - A cross between Pink Floyd and Vangelis, or King Crimson and Enya? No comparison does it justice, but it is moving. A masterful disc.

Still Fun, Less Honest...,
By Tom (Palatine, IL USA) - See all my reviews

What I loved about Yamanashi Blues was the elegant simplicity of the thing. Three guys, three guitars...simple, direct, and really good. This album adds a bit of production to the mix, some strings here, a little background stuff there...it's all still very good, but I liked stuff the old way. I guess I really am a ludite. Some gold here though. This is one of the best versions of "Apache" I have ever heard, and remarkably, these guys managed to turn the goofy theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly," into high art. Lotsa fun.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is worth the price of the whole CD! Yes, this is the Bach piece redone superbly by these guys. When I saw that Robert Fripp was the executive producer, I had high hopes for this record. This surpassed even my expectations! The players and production is fresh by today's standards. They lean towards an accessable progressive edge and will not disappoint you. Phenominal spin!!!
