About the Author
G. Michael Schneider is Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. His interests include parallel processing, computer networks, and computer science education. He has written textbooks on software development, data structures, computer organization, and a breadth-first overview of computer science and was a member of the committee that authored the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum 2001. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach and do computer science curriculum development in Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal, and Mongolia.
Judith Gersting is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Hawaii, Hilo. She is also the department chair and has written a number of college textbooks. I am a professor of computer science. I taught at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for 8 years and Macalester College in St. Paul for 25 years before retiring in 2007. Currently I am a Visiting Professor at Columbia University in New York where I live for six months of the year with my wife Ruth. The other six months I reside in the Twin Cities.
My wife, children, and I had the good fortune to live and work overseas fourteen times-Australia to Zimbabwe, Mauritius to Mongolia-for periods of 1 to 8 months. We have gazed at Everest, ridden camels in the Gobi, walked with elephants in the Serengeti, visited the indigenous tribes in Borneo, and lived on a tropical island paradise, all without ever reaching into my own wallet and without ever once giving up my regular day job.

Kind of Difficult to Understand,

This is the manual, so it should make things less confusing, but I find it's usually the opposite. My professor can explain it so fluidly, but this book makes it confusing to follow mathematically sometimes, as well as the Practice Problems being confusingly worded at times. Overall, I just use it for the practice problems and pay attention to my professor. You can still learn from this book, but you have to be more right-brain than I am to understand the flow.

This book was required for an introductory computer science class at school and let me say that this book is terrible. The programming examples are HARD to follow, often there are two or more examples discussed at one time, and the authors jump around from example to example. Had I not had to buy this for school I would have returned it straight away to amazon because of how poorly it is written. It is a waste of time to read this book. I ended up purchasing another book on beginning C++ programming just so I could do the required homework for my class.
