5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut from a fantastic new talent..., August 16, 2002
This review is from: Invitation to Eavesdrop (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for quite a while, but never got around to listening to it until some of the tracks began to get air play. Shaun Groves is fantastic musician, singer and songwriter, and his skills are quite apparent throughout almost every song on "Invitation to Eavesdrop". Few arstists in Christian music have impacted me in the way that Shaun Groves has. "Move Me" and "Welcome Home" are fantastic tracks, and are worth the price of the album alone. I recommend this CD to anyone...

Ladies and Gentleman, I would like to introduce to you, the freshest, no make that tightest debut album I've heard since Jennifer Knapp's Kansas. Now I have stated in the past that ever year there is that one particular artist that debuts and makes you sit up and take notice. Enter Shaun Groves. Originally intending to move to Nashvile solely as a songwriter for other artists, Groves' plan quickly took a turn when record label's started asking him to record solo. After signing with the splendid Rocketown Records and Monroe Jones producing, we have one of the best albums of the year, hands down. The disc opens up with one of the most unique lyrics to see from a Christian artist in a while. "Should I Tell Them" speaks of how Groves has many insecurities when trying to tell others about Christ. "Cause they're thirsty but my cup is empty/Come and meet me here in this place/'Cause I'm ashamed, and I'm unprepared/And I'm just plain afraid" Such vulnerability is rarely seen in artists today. However this isn't the only song in which Groves pours his insecurities to the listener. "Two Cents" speaks of how Groves can not give answers to his friends questions when he has questions of his own. Musically, this album is modern rock at its best with some worshipful tunes thrown in the mix. "Welcome Home" has to be one of the catchiest songs with more hooks in it since Avalon's "Testify to Love". "Move Me" and "Satellite" show that Groves can hold his own against any Modern Rock band today. Groves can really sing some soft ballads when he wants to also. "Your Renown" and "Abba Father" are great worship tunes sure to become classics in a church setting. Earlier this year I was very disappointed that there was no new artist that really grabbed my attention. However, Groves has filled that void and has recorded one of the most solid debut recording in years. Don't feel one incling of hesitation to "eavesdrop" on Groves, it would be well worth your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible debut, February 24, 2003

This review is from: Invitation to Eavesdrop (Audio CD)
I first heard Shaun Groves when he was the opening act at a Jennifer Knapp/ Jars of Clay concert. I thought he was decent, but wasn't completely impressed. I saw him later on that same tour and was more impressed by him so I decided to take a major leap of faith and buy the cd. It was one of my best purchases. While he is pretty good in concert, this debut cd blows much of what I've heard recently out of the water. It is just that good. Radio singles include "Welcome Home" "Move Me" "After the Music Fades" and "Satellite". For me, the most moving tracks are "Should I Tell Them", which deals about the fear involved in talking about Christ, "Damage Done", and "Two Cents". All in all, this is one of the best cds in my collection and is clearly one of the best of the year it was released. Top of the line Christian music, and just good music in any category.

Once in a great while a new artist comes along that really speaks to your heart. Shaun Groves IS that artist. Rocketown records has done it again by signing a remarkable talent. Shaun's lyrics have remarkable depth and clarity. His spiritual observations reflect the lives of all christians. Musically it's all there, from piano to guitars to violin and cello. I encourage everyone to discover what an awesome CD this is. You won't de disappointed. This is an invitation to eavesdrop!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaun Groves way of letting himself known.....works..., October 21, 2002

This review is from: Invitation to Eavesdrop (Audio CD)
Invitation to Eavesdrop has one of the most talented worship solo voices that I have may ever heard. This cd from track one to track 10 leaves no thought that Shaun (the lead singer) wants all that listen to this cd to hear his passion for the Lord and wants it to bleed onto them also. To give you a quick tour of this cd.
Track one Shaun in a very up beat musical questioneable way is asking God "What should I do with all these none believers?" The title of it is Should I tell them.
Track two Damage Done is a song that describes a incident possibly that Shaun had with a friend and how that incident has drawn them both so far apart and how he is sorry and convicted for what he has done.
Track three Welcome Home is a transition in the cd were Shaun takes a step back and explains that he is not perfect nor is he near this state, but that the Lord is always in work in his life and that he is always coming back to his heart. This song proclaims that Christ does live within us and shaun is aknowledging this and making it known that he knows this.
Track four Two Cents is moreless shaun telling what he thinks about many things.
Track five Move Me discusses the idea of that Shaun wants to do something in the world and yet he doesn't know what to do and so this song is kinda a prayer that God would move him and tell him what it is that he should do.
Track six Satellite talks about how God presence and spirit is the center of Shaun's life and focus. This is very good up lifting song for those still seeking.
Track seven Your Renown takes a path of where Shaun asks God to make is path way straight and always be with him and whatever happens that he will not turn around for another.
Track eight Abba Father is one of the most passionate songs and almost a son telling a father how much he loves him and how much he needs him. This is a tear jerker.
Track nine After the Music Fades is a worship song that talkes about simply that worshiping God is not just about music and that when the music fades that he will still be in worship.
Track ten Last Notes simply talks about how when Shaun's life shall end that he shall be in heaven that he is fearless of that thoght.
In Conclusion this cd is a must for everyone. There is something for everyone and even those that are not christians. Do yourself a favor and find this cd and listen to it...esspecially if you have read this whole review:)

I saw Shaun Groves on tour with Jars of Clay and Jennifer Knapp recently. I had heard some of his songs on the radio, but when I heard him in concert, I was touched. So I went out and bought the album, and I was not disappointed! On the contrary, I was very pleased. His songs are so beautiful and so sincere; you can tell they come from the depths of his soul, and every person listening to these songs can relate to them. This is truly a great album. A great suggestion for anyone looking for an album full of intelligent, beautiful, artfully-done songs!

Shaun Groves debuts on Rocketown Records with this CD. The 10 songs here are at times worshipful and other times painfully honest. Mr. Groves is obviously someone acquainted with the struggle to worship and live for God while still being human.

The project opens with "Should I Tell Them." Here, he struggles with the call of Christians to share their faith when they are still sinners. Fortunately, God's "light [shines] through" us anyway.

"Damage Done" and "Two Cents" deal with struggles in human relationships. The first is about a damaged friendship needing forgiveness and restoration. The second is a reminder to all of us that God is the one who ultimately helps with our problems when our best friends can't.

"Welcome Home" was the first major hit off this CD. It takes the metaphor of our heart being Christ's home and expands upon it. It's a challenging reminder of who should really be in control of our lives.

My personal favorite is "Abba Father." This song is a personal prayer of love to God for the way He cares for us, His children. I'll usually play this song a couple times on the way through the album.

The entire album is challenging and uplifting. Shaun Groves has a very poetic pen and a great gift for writing melody. It's fast becoming a favorite of mine. Pick it up today and enjoy eavesdropping on some personal moments that will encourage you in your daily walk.

I fell in love with the song Welcome Home on the radio this summer, and couldn't wait to buy and hear the rest of Invitation to Eavesdrop as soon as it came out. I was anything but disappointed. This Christian rock CD is Shaun Groves' first. I've not always been a fan of contemporary Christian music because much of it didn't seem very exciting or just didn't have a lot of depth. However, Groves' music has a wealth of spiritual meaning that often moves me to tears. He shares his heart and his faith in a way that's surprisingly and refreshingly genuine. As an added bonus, I love the sound of every single song on the CD. This is perhaps the only album I've ever owned that doesn't tempt me to skip a song here or there. It has an overall very upbeat feel and really lifts your mood. A few songs are a little slower, more worshipful and contemplative, but they are still just as captivating. I have only one complaint about Invitation - that I lost my copy. I am definitely replacing it!
