Your "Invitation" to a Jazz Party,
By Michael B. Richman (Portland, Maine USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Invitation (Audio CD)
As I've searched the pages of Amazon for OJC CDs that are going out of print, I'm always surprised when I come across an absolutely classic jazz album that has never been reviewed. Milt Jackson's "Invitation" is a disc that I have enjoyed for years and I'm sad to see is being deleted. The album was recorded over three sessions in late 1962, and features an all-star cast including Kenny Dorham, Jimmy Heath, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Carter and Connie Kay. "Invitation" is a favortie for two reasons -- it has great improvisations and solos, but also some terrific small group arrangements by Heath. Fans of The Thumper or Big 6 (see my reviews for both) will be happy to get this "Invitation" in the mail.
