5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent manual on how to search for and find God.
The first edition of this book was published in 1959, under the title of FIRST QUESTIONS ON THE LIFE OF THE SPIRIT. It is a beautifully done, no- nonsense method for developing a relationship with God, for attaining a connection to God. It would be hard for me to recommend a book more highly than I do this one. If you have a burning need to get going on your...

3.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual insights buried in blarney
This book really does have some insight into the spiritual life. Unfortunately, these genuine insights are buried in a mountain of blousy, folksy, self-indulgent verbiage. The book needs to be reduced by half. It tries the reader's patience to wade through such poor writing. For example: "But, occasionally the Self-Existent visits me in his marvelous and...

If you have a burning need to get going on your spiritual journey and don't know how or where to look, try this book. I am a conservative Roman Catholic and I dig deeply into the wells of my religion, but this book really got me going back in the early 60's. The book uses many resources, Christian and Non-Christian, but I am constantly referring back to it as the years go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars A LIFE CHANGING, SAVING AND SHAKING RESOURSE!!!!!!!!!, March 29, 2001

Matthew Azimi (Brewster New York) - See all my reviews
This book has been among the few that has changed my life. It is forged in deep real life expierience. If I could recomend only one book to anyone in serious spiritual trouble, to my best friend or brother, it would be this one. It leads the way to other books and to real life practical expierience. It is not a theological discussion nor is it merely sentimental. It leads to a genuine spiritual awakening. This book, if sincerely read and applied can radically alter your life. If you feel that there is more to life than there seems to be, if you feel There must be more, you are right. If you are in any kind of serious trouble this book ofers something amazing to all.....The Way Out. My name is Matthew F. Azimi. Aazimi2468@aol.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-changing, April 12, 2006
This review is from: Invitation to a great experiment: Exploring the possibility that God can be known (Hardcover)
I personally know many people whose lives have turned 180 degrees simply by reading (and making the experiment to try what is suggested in) this book. I am helped, reminded, uplifted and changed everytime I re-read this book.

This book really does have some insight into the spiritual life. Unfortunately, these genuine insights are buried in a mountain of blousy, folksy, self-indulgent verbiage. The book needs to be reduced by half. It tries the reader's patience to wade through such poor writing. For example: "But, occasionally the Self-Existent visits me in his marvelous and litte-appreciated quality of geburah: rigor, severity. And then it is brought home to my reluctant attention where Tom Powers really stands in these matters. And I see, quite apart from any monkey-play of pious inferiority or phony humility but very simply as the truth, that in the practice of prayer and love I am in subkindergarten." It's a shame that the style is so off-putting.
