Book Description

0472067842 978-0472067848 November 5, 2001
Invitations to Love provides a close examination of the dramatic shift away from arranged marriage and capture marriage toward elopement in the village of Junigau, Nepal. Laura M. Ahearn shows that young Nepalese people are applying their newly acquired literacy skills to love-letter writing, fostering a transition that involves not only a shift in marriage rituals, but also a change in how villagers conceive of their own ability to act and attribute responsibility for events. These developments have potential ramifications that extend far beyond the realm of marriage and well past the Himalayas.

The love-letter correspondences examined by Ahearn also provide a deeper understanding of the social effects of literacy. While the acquisition of literary skills may open up new opportunities for some individuals, such skills can also impose new constraints, expectations, and disappointments. The increase in female literacy rates in Junigau in the 1990s made possible the emergence of new courtship practices and facilitated self-initiated marriages, but it also reinforced certain gender ideologies and undercut some avenues to social power, especially for women.

Scholars, and students in such fields as anthropology, women's studies, linguistics, development studies, and South Asian studies will find this book ethnographically rich and theoretically insightful.

Laura M. Ahearn is Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Rutgers University.

Laura M. Ahearn, an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers University, is a linguistic and sociocultural anthropologist who works on issues of gender, kinship, and marriage in Nepal. Her research interests include agency (both linguistic and social), constraints on meaning in Nepali women's songfests, and the changing meanings and values surrounding childbirth in Nepal. She first went to Nepal as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1980s and has returned many times since to conduct anthropological fieldwork. Her first book, Invitations to Love: Literacy, Love Letters, and Social Change in Nepal (University of Michigan Press, 2001), was awarded Honorable Mention in the Society of Linguistic Anthropology's Edward Sapir Book Prize Competition. Her second book, entitled, Living Language: An Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology, is a clear and accessible exploration of the prominent theoretical issues in linguistic anthropology and a student-friendly introduction to the study of language in real-life social contexts around the world. Chapter topics include gender, race, and ethnicity, language acquisition and socialization, performance, literacy practices, multilingualism, and globalization.

This review is from: Invitations to Love: Literacy, Love Letters, and Social Change in Nepal (Paperback)
'Invitation to love: Literacy, Love Letters & Social Change in Nepal' is an excellent book, which shows how society affects individuals and vice versa. The book shows how both are changing simultaneously. The book takes literacy as a means to analyze the structure-agency relationship in micro level. The book is worth to read.
