Book Description

October 1, 1999
Frank gives newer and deeper meaning to the role of father as primary caregiver to his children. Frank provides an indispensable primer on how to give your children the involvement they deserve while improving your marriage and outlook on life in the process.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Cynics might easily accuse Frank, a family therapist and a stay-at-home dad, as playing up to stressed-out moms. After all, mothers tend to be the managers of the fabled "second shift" (the full-time job of raising children that follows a full-time job) and probably are the most likely to browse for parenting books. At times Frank does, indeed, seem interested in providing women with a truckload of ammunition to use against their hapless men. However, blame is not his purpose, and ultimately his vision of families where fathers and mothers are on equal footing parentingwise is tremendously appealing. Frank argues that children benefit when their dads are part of their livesAand vice versa (children gain greater self-esteem and grow emotionally, while fathers gain more confidence as parents). In fact, everyone benefits, claims Frank, when men and women parent as partners, and he offers a road map for "every season" of children's development, as well as specific tips on how dads (and stepdads) can get involved every step of the way. Frank is generally evenhanded and realistic in his suggestions, recognizing that more women than men still stay at home full-time. (Oct.) FYI: This book first appeared as a 1999 Golden Books hardcover, The Involved Father.

From the Publisher

"In this unusual book Robert Frank gives newer and deeper meaning to the role of father as primary caregiver to his children. He has inspired parents to seek creative solutions that foster continuity of nurturing care and strengthening bonds and attachments within the family. This book will have a profound effect on our future." --Isabelle Fox, Ph.D., Author of Being There: The Benefits of a Stay-at-Home Parent.

"Avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach, this practical guide to father involvement is chock-full of small, realistic steps that respect the different needs of different families. I recommend it highly." --James A. Levine, ED.D., Director of the Fatherhood Project, Families and Work Institute, and author of Working Fathers: New Strategies for Balancing Work and Family

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is gold for parents partnering to raise children., October 1, 1999

This review is from: The Involved Father: Family-Tested Solutions for Getting Dads to Participate More in the Daily Lives of Their Children (Hardcover)
As a 50-year old looking back at my parenting experiences, I found this book reassuring in those things that I did right and revealing about those things I could have done better. It is a book not just for fathers. It would be a mistake to give it to a father and say,"Here, this is what you must do." It is a book to be read and experienced together by parents willing to create a partnership in raising their children. The book covers concerns from before the baby's birth through young adulthood. It offers a wealth of anecdotes and practical suggestions to help parents nurture and guide their children while maintaining a balanced parenting relationship. I wish I had this book before my first child was born, but, it is not simply another "newborn parent" offering. If I had received this book at any stage of my children's development, I would have found it insightful and helpful. I plan to send it to son, daughters, nieces, and nephews. A great gift to be given by a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or friend. Robert Frank's professionalism and caring shines through.

This review is from: The Involved Father: Family-Tested Solutions for Getting Dads to Participate More in the Daily Lives of Their Children (Hardcover)
If you get only one fathering/parenting book, this is the one to get. It covers everything from the importance of dad's involvement to child development to spousal communications and more. Bob Frank has been on the forefront of fathering trends for years and has many years of experience as both a parent and a family therapist.

Highly Recommended.
