In long midnight hours when morning seemed weeks, if not years, away, Thurman's words have kept watch with me. -- Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple

From the Back Cover

" In those long midnight hours when morning seemed weeks, if not years, away, the words of Howard Thurman have kept watch with me."-Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple

Howard Thurman-Minister, philosopher, educator-has been called "one of the greatest spiritual resources of this nation." His vision, which draws on the richest aspects of the Black experience in America, has deeply touched people of all races, faiths, and cultures. His spiritual influence on leaders of the civil rights movement and on Americans at large has bee likened to that of Martin Luther King, Jr. This anthology of Thurman's most important and eloquent writings, selected by his daughter Anne, is a passionate appraisal of the encounter between God and man and between men. The essence of Howard Thurman and his thought emerges in a message of hope, reconciliation, and love.

Howard Thurman, born in a segregated Florida town in 1900, was recognized as one of this century's foremost religious leaders at the time of his death in 1981. He taught and lectured at over five hundred institutions around the world and wrote more than twenty books of spiritual discovery and inspiration . He served as dean of Rankin Chapel and professor theology at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He was minister and cofounder of the interdenominational Fellowship Church in San Francisco-the first fully integrated church in America. Later, he was dean of Marsh Chapel and minister-at-large of Boston University.

Anne Spencer Thurman is a lawyer and journalist. She lives in Oakland.

Vincent Harding is on the faculty of the Iliff School of Theology at the University of Denver. He is the author of There Is a River, an acclaimed study of Blacks of America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moments of High Resolve, February 22, 2005
By
This review is from: For the Inward Journey (Paperback)
In the moments of my despair at being burned out of our home in Malibu, this book, For The Inward Journey, soothed my weeping mind and heart. I quoted this most incredible book many times when I was Editor of Science of Mind magazine and as a spiritual counselor at Agape Center of Truth in Culver City. I have many favorites that have motivated me but the eloquence of Dr. Thurman's, 'The Moments of High Resolve' touch me deeply and I am uplifted. The first sentence alone is brilliant: "Despite the dullness and barrenness of the days that pass, if I search with due diligence, I can always find a deposit left by some former radiance." This particular essay is 3 short paragraphs that will light up your day in a few moments. I believe this book is a must read for everyone on the spiritual path. I'm certain you will be delighted.
