Better to back up, than to be sorry,

This review is from: Iomega 32394 External USB 2.0 7200 RPM 120 GB Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I was interested in an external hard drive for an easy solution to any future C;\ drive problems I may have. My only problem was the usb, but that really has nothing at all to do with this hard drive, and in fact this hard drive is for usb or firewire. I followed the install instructions exactly and my computer a Windows XP Dell found the hardware immediately. Two CD's came with the hard drive, I put in the Iomega one and installed the easy to find back up software. I was given the option to set the back ups to happen when ever I wanted it to. I chose a time that I would be asleep so I wouldn't have to wait for files to move over. It works, I have checked it. It copies over any changes I make on my c drive to my new Iomega drive. I also upon the backup install had the software copy my program files and my documents to the new drive, this was the only time consumming part, but it worked great, and since I have it add the changes at an offline time, it continues to never take any time. Now, of course I hope that nothing ever happens, but just in case, I will have everything on my external drive waiting for me if I need to re-install a crashed OS. I do know that this works because on an older computer I have two drives and I had to reformat the main drive clean. When I reinstalled windows onto the main drive, all the files and data were still there as before on my other drive. I mentioned they provided two software cds, I never installed the other one, Norton Ghost because I am running Go Back and didn't want a conflict with two programs that might both be creating a false partition. I don't know if there would be a conflict because I don't know for sure if Ghost does create a false partition, but I do know that Go Back does and I didn't want to take any risk. At any rate, the hard drive is a great investment and all went with ease.

One obvious design flaw...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Iomega 32394 External USB 2.0 7200 RPM 120 GB Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I installed the drive with no problems (Win2000) and it works extremely fast (USB 2). In fact, there is no noticeable difference between retrieval from my internal c & d drives and the external drive. The only problem is the drive never shuts down. Even when I power down my laptop, the drive keeps whinig all night long...relentlessly! There is no on/off button. Iomega support told me to simply unplug the power chord from the device when I'm not using it. That is rediculous! How could Iomega release a product with such an obvious design flaw?

I bought this drive looking for extra room as my laptop's drive was slowly dwindling down, and I found more space than I may ever need. This drive, with USB 2.0, will provide great transfer rates, and comes in very handy if you like to download programs, games, songs or anything in great numbers that will quickly fill a lesser drive. To have this plugged in all the time would be great, except like one reviewer said, it does not shut down. You could cook an egg on it if you leave it long enough. And for the HDD, it may as well stand for Hard-Drive Dinosaur, meaning the inexplicable roaring sound that comes from the drive during moments of use and inactivity. My friend bought one and experiences the same thing, but only after a while did this begin. I think it's the reading mechanism moving back and forth. I don't know if this is a common problem, but it can be annoying. This drive is of substantial size, and the USB 2.0 cable running from the drive is very short so you'll need to keep it close by unless you can find an "adapter" cable. All in all I would recommend this drive as a vast high-speed extra storage option that could be better if it were designed by a company that realizes external hard drives aren't just backup devices, but rather something that can be used all the time.

I have a 120GB HD on my PC and was looking for a way to back up all my photo's and documents as it's getting pretty full. Burning onto CD's just dosen't cut it anymore. This drive fit the bill nicely. With USB 2.0 it's pretty quick too. I haven't had any problems with the drive at all.

I am NOT a tekky guru and was able to install and use in very short time. The directions are not as clear as they could be but the drive proved to be exactly what Iomega says it is. It was backwards compatabile and is very easy to backup files. I also use it as simply another drive and carry it back and forth from home to work. I think I will even buy the larger one that Iomega has out.
My SysOp @ work1 is Win200; @ home XP; and @ work2 is Mostly Win 2003. NO problems using it on Fat and NSFS systems. Gets a bit warm so prop it up on 2 sticks so air flows above/below.

I love my 120GB USB drive. It's perfect for transporting large amounts of data between places. With the USB 2.0 it transfers pretty quickly. I usually leave mine plugged in all the time and use it to back up all my documents, pictures, and mp3s every night automatically with the IOMEGA backup software, which works quite well. Although it comes with other software to backup your whole system which i haven't tried yet.I would probably buy another one for even more space, but they're pretty expensive. You can get an internal 120GB for half the price. So far I've had no problems, and would definitely recommend it.

Outstandanding Backup Drive - A MUST HAVE.,

I unpacked this drive, installed the CD software, plugged it in and it's been running like a dream since. Simple and easy, it runs in the background so there's no interference with your work. Make unlimited backups or any number you choose. The software is very flexible and allows easy user changes - for which files to monitor (backup) when, and how often. This is a great drive for home or business. The 120 GB drive might be a bit bulky for some to travel with but, it's advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This review is for the USB version. I understand that there's a Firewire version and I'm looking forward to trying that one.

The help assistence for this product is poor. After experimenting with the external 120 GB HDD, I found that it works well if you install the software first and then re-start your computer. next, you have to go to the device manager and manually install drivers for all usb mass storage devices. Next, you have to install a driver for the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. Do not install the Nec PCI to USB enhanced host controller (B1).The next step is to shut down your computer and wait about 8 seconds. Re-start your computer. You may have to go back to the device manager and make some changes on drivers. This 120GH HHD is not for the amateur computer tech and don't expect help from the iomega computer tech. It took me three months to finally get this HHD installed so that it works without any problems.
