My current solution is I went back into the windows management console, selected the virtual CD, selected "change drive letter" and then "remove".

I purchased this drive so I could back up my computer and many media files, and to relocate some files from a very old and very small hard drive. After purchasing this drive I learned something that is not listed in the product description. This drive does not work with windows backup, or basically any other system imaging software, due to its sector size (4k vs the standard 512). Iomega support found on their forum blames this on Microsoft, and Microsoft blames this on the hardware. Regardless, avoid purchasing this drive until it starts working with back up programs.

If you're just going to use this to hold files and don't mind manually transferring and re-transferring files should something happen to your computer, this is fine. But for the price, I expect more.

Out of the box, the Iomega Prestige external hard drive is a looker. The dark brushed metal finish and metal case gives it a substantial feel and appearance. The drive is marked as being made in China.

As can be seen in the photos for this product, all the connections are on the back of the unit, as well as a physical power switch. Power is supplied by an external wall transformer with an output of 12V at 1.5A.

Getting the drive operational on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC was very easy and straightforward. Attach the power cord, the USB cable, and flip the power switch. After a short spin-up, the drive appears in the list of available drives in Windows. Windows responds with the normal dialog about browsing the drive's contents, but there is also a second dialog that appears for something called "Virtual CD" which is a separate virtual drive that is xxx in size. This partition contains a 83 MB file that appears to allow for encryption on the drive.

Transfer rates for the Iomega drive via a USB 2.0 connection are on par with the Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive. On a single large file (~1GB), write speed was 17.9 MB/s and read speed was 34 MB/s. On a set of 813 files totalling 1.09 GB, the write speed was 13.1 MB/s and read speed was 57.9 MB/s. Unfortunately, I was not able to test transfers using the USB 3.0 capability of this drive.

Power consumption is quite good on this unit. I was pleased to see that when powered up but not plugged into a PC, the drive consumed less power than could be measured by my KillAWatt meter (less than 0.1 W).

No matter what version of Windows 7 you're running you will have issues with this device. I read the reviews, saw the Win7 issues (everyone seemed to be running a version of Win7 Home) and thought the same wouldn't apply to me. I'm running Windows 7 64bit enterprise which is the most idiot-proof, stable and least buggy OS I have ever used (I'm including Mac's in the latter) so I thought I stood a good chance of a positive experience. Nope.

Pro's: The drive connects and transfers files phenomenally (I'm getting -+28mbs transfer speeds). It also shuts down and powers up with your system (but this can be buggy as I'll explain). That's about it, if you would like it to do more than that you're going to be out of luck.

Cons:

- First thing I noticed was my system would hang upon boot when the drive was not physically turned off. So I turned it off by the power switch and the system would boot properly. I tried swapping the USB ports, reformatting the drive didn't make a difference. To fix I had to go into the bios and disable USB storage device detection, simple enough but I was wanted to avoid the latter as it's best for systems to work such things out for themselves.

- The drive does not work well with Windows Media Center. WMC has a problem reading files from it and should I start to play a movie it will do all sorts of odd things. Pictures can be slow and music will periodically hang if you try to select another song.

- Executing files from the drive is tricky. If you try installing a saved program from the drive it will eventually install but will take a long time as will saving a file from a program to the drive. As an IT professional I know at some point an installation/save will fail.

This hard drive comes with a hidden partition to hold their propietary encription software.

I formatted and re-partitioned it (with their tool from their website, normal methods didn't work).

After that, the device wasn't recognized as a hard drive but as a "Unknown USB device", I tried to "safely remove it" in Windows and wasn't possible.

Because it wasn't writing or reading anything in the drive I though it couldn't break anything to turn it off, so I did it.

After that, the light in the case (for power on and write/read indications) was half the bright it was before.

I think that a hard drive that is sold for "easily backup and secure data" shouldn't break because of a suddenly lost of power.

The technical service said that they would immediately replace me the unit, I just had to send it to USA, Mexico or Brasil. I live in Colombia. The shipping from here to there costs almost the same price of a new unit.

I was able to take the hard drive appart, it's a Samsung, normal hard drive, I bought a case with eSATA connection and it's working fine. But the only part that Iomega produces, the case, got broken quickly.
