5.0 out of 5 stars Great product with no complaints thus far.
I purchased this HD about 2 months ago to use as an external for my HTPC. As its only use is to store DVDs back-ups and stream through Windows Media Center, I can't attest to any grueling data transfer tests. For my purpose it has worked perfectly. Although I don't advise it and I might have just been very lucky, this drive even survived a 3 foot drop while spinning...

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE of cheap Hard Drives holding your precious data!
Bought the drive 6 months ago as a backup for my audio sessions. I backed up about 200GB of data and put it away in the box in a safe place. 6 months later, the drive was dead. Nothing was spinning only a blue light that showed the power was on. I only used the thing once! Thank god I had a second backup on an external Western Digital HD. Data recovery (if they can even...

This review is from: Iomega Select 34974 2TB External Desktop HD (CD-ROM)
I purchased this HD about 2 months ago to use as an external for my HTPC. As its only use is to store DVDs back-ups and stream through Windows Media Center, I can't attest to any grueling data transfer tests. For my purpose it has worked perfectly. Although I don't advise it and I might have just been very lucky, this drive even survived a 3 foot drop while spinning and continued to work. The only thing that you should be aware prior to purchasing is that you must use an external power source, which is supplied and common for all 2TB HDs, and the drive will not be exactly 2TB (I had a 10% loss or about 1.8TB of available space after formatting), which is common for all HDs. As soon as I fill the first HD, I will be purchasing another.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Iomega Select 34974 2TB External Desktop HD (CD-ROM)
I absolutely love this hard drive. I have 2 of them because of my demand for videos and audio. I formatted it and away I went. I filled the first one up and now I'm starting on the other one. Amazon has the best price on it as well. I bought my first one from tigerdirect.com and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $130. But, even with that, that's not a bad price for a compact usb driven external hard drive. That's cheap but, if you're like me, you want quality without being out of too much bread. So, thanks Amazon for your low prices. Better than Wal-Mart. Especially for someone overseas like myself. Hope this helps some how.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the price, this is a great external drive!, December 2, 2011
This review is from: Iomega Select 34974 2TB External Desktop HD (CD-ROM)
I bought 2 of these drives w/o any previous info on Iomega external hard drives. These have worked out beautifully w/o any flaws or problems. I use these to back-up internal HD's, audio storage, and store movies in case I break a disc or they get scratched or cracked.
I own and use Western Digital, Buffalo, Seagate, and now these Iomega external drives. My WinXP recognized them immediately w/o any special drivers. Hook up the power supply and the USB connector (which is supplied with the unit) and you are ready to go.
I transferred over 700 GB's from one of my 1 TB drives (since it was almost full) to this unit and then tested the transferred data to verify it's integrity and everything worked perfectly. The worst part was having to 'wait' for the transfer... So I set up the computer to "hibernate" when finished and went to bed. The next morning I brought it out of hibernation and checked the transfer and every file exactly matched the original.
Like any high precision electronic equipment, they need to be handled delicately for longevity and to function properly. Only time will tell how long these drives will last, but ALL (9) of my external HD's work perfectly and some are over 6 yrs old. I paid about $90 each for these drives and plan on buying more. I do a lot of video and music editing and these are great for data storage.
If ANY hard drive starts making strange sounds during operation or start up... That's the time to buy & transfer the data to a new unit. One last thing, when my ext. drives are not needed, I power them down to extend their life.
Hope this has helped.
