I couldn't get this unit to work despite a ton of e-mails to and from the manufacturer's tech support people. My problem: no media player software, including the Cineplayer software packaged with the unit, was able to play a DVD on this unit without false copyright protection errors and other aberrations. Iomega tech support asked me to try a ton of solutions, none of which worked. Then Iomega changed its story and said the problem was the Cineplayer, which won't work under Windows XP! They advised me to delete Cineplayer and try Windows Media Player, but that didn't work either. This unit is going back to the merchant. I don't believe the manufacturer tested it fully and I've given the manufacturer every chance to prove that the unit works under XP. In my personal experience, it does not.

1.0 out of 5 stars software not included, June 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Iomega Super DVD Writer 16x Dual-Format USB 2.0 External Drive - DVDRW (+R dual layer) drive ( 33245 ) (Personal Computers)
The description of the writer implied that software was included. I specifically chose this article because it was described as working with Mac OS X. However I can not find software from iomega or anywhere else. The result is that the unit is useless to me.

I bought this new from Iomega and it goes through disks one after the other with media errors. I hate it!

4.0 out of 5 stars For the most part, it does what it should., August 1, 2007

I used this burner with Roxio Toast software and was happy with the results. In order to minimize "coasters" I would burn the disc to an image file on the computer first, and then burn discs from the image file. Internal drives are always better because the data isn't going through a connection like USB, but for an external DVD solution this drive from Iomega is reliable.

I am not sure why the other review is so bad, but let me tell you, this is one awesome dvd drive. I have not had one bad disk made with this unit....If you are trying to copy a copy protected DVD, it is your software causing you the problems, not the DVD unit.....This unit is perfect....

3.0 out of 5 stars Life Expectancy Too Short, March 10, 2007
This review is from: Iomega Super DVD Writer 16x Dual-Format USB 2.0 External Drive - DVDRW (+R dual layer) drive ( 33245 ) (Personal Computers)
I would have gone with a five-star review, if I had experienced a decent survivability rate.

It did a great job burning DVDs and CDs, but I would get quite a few errors on some DVD burn attempts that would coaster the blank DVD. I used Roxio Media Creator Version 7+ with decent results. My DVD player in my living room was sometimes finicky when I fed it DVDs burned on this player. Then, came the fateful day when it went Tango Uniform on me after only six months of service.

This would have been a five instead of a three, but hit/miss scenario with the DVD burn attempts, and the early Last Rites ritual pulled this rating down to a three.

As for the one star rating in this series of reviews, all I can say is that there is a different configuration for each individual computer that rolls off an assembly shelf, so it is striclty hit or miss, and I don't think that a DVD burner carries all the responsibility for poor performance.

Go ahead and get one, but if possible, but dedicate the PC it is used on strictly to burning DVDs. Also, do whatever it takes to keep the hardware and the hard drive(s) fast.
