This drive is fast--much faster than I expected. I am using RAID 0 since usable space (4 TB) is more important than mirroring and other such RAID features, as this is the back-up drive for three other drives with a total capacity of 4 TB.( I also have an off-site back-up.)

My only complaint is that it has a "brick" power cord rather than an internal supply. I'v got enough bricks laying around on the floor! Plus, bricks usually have power cords twice as long as necessary. I'm tired of power cords, cables, and bricks!!

It still rates 5 stars with me just because of the speed.

I got this to use as a Time Machine Backup for my iMac 27 running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. It's already pre-formatted for Mac.

Works great and is really fast. I am using firewire 800 and it did a 33 GB backup really quick. I don't knowhow long it took. I left the room and it was finished when I got back. I checked the backup structure and yup, it got "everything".

My wife and I are both photographers and we have 10's of thousands of photos that we use as reference. It will make a great 3rd backup for those and allow them to be online and at our fingertips.

It's behind our computer (which is quiet) and can't be heard.

Five stars all around.

This is a cool stuff May 21, 2010

When I was thinking of a high capacity storage solution, a friend suggested that I try out Iomega 34440.

When I plugged it in to my Mac Pro and started transferring the files, I found the transfer rate reached up to 800Mbps which is pretty fast enuf for me. My Mac Pro has a FireWire 800 and I think this hard drive is an apt one for it. I also love the speed the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 delivers.

The drive is HFS+ formatted and it is an additional plus because it has the ability to support larger files and uses Unicode. I must say, RAID 1 security feature for mirroring the content is pretty strong. Except for a lil-bit longer than expected customer clarification service, I feel that 34440 is a good one for neat and huge storage.

Junk - Poor quality control!
Ordered 2 units, one was DOA, and the other one would only work in a RAID1 configuration. Iomega tech support stated they must have had a bad batch.
