5.0 out of 5 stars Aqueous Electrolytes Thermodynamics, December 29, 2010

This review is from: Ionic Equilibrium: Solubility and pH Calculations (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding discussion of aqueous Ionic Equilibrium. This book is the third in a series written by James Butler. Earlier books are: Ionic Equilibrium A Mathematical Approach Addison Wesley 1964 ISBN 0-201-00730-4 547 pages and Solubility and pH Calculations Addison Wesley 1964 ISBN 0-201-00733-9 104 pages. The second book is a very good introduction to the chemistry of aqueous electrolyte solutions with less emphasis on the mathematics. Used copies are available from Amazon and Ebay.

I suggest that you first read and study the Solubility and pH Calculations book. This will give you a view of the forest. Then read and study the Ionic Equilibrium book, this will give you a view of the trees.

I used the Ionic Equilibrium book for a class I taught to Chemical Engineers at Rowan University a couple years ago.

I also recomend the new book, An Introduction to Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions by Margaret Bobson Wright, Wiley 2007 ISBN 978-0-470-84293-5 574 pages. This is a very good description of the chemistry. It has very good worked examples but NO references.

The chemical description of pH or equilibrium result in a set of non-linear equations. The above books discuss methods to solve these equation based on approximations and sequentical calculations. If you are serious about solving many large equation sets you need to buy equation solving software. Suggested software;
* TK Solver from Universal Technical Systems @ [...], ( a general purpose non-linear equation solver)
* [...] ( this is a big time powerful commercial system with large database of thermodynamic properties)
* PolyMath by Professor Cutlip at University of Connecticut sorry that I don't have a better ref but you can look this up in Amazon or Google.
