The book includes case studies for a number of different applications.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

An inside look at the architectures and internals that will handle tomorrow's terabit traffic streams. If you don't fully understand switching technology, you can't make ATM "real." Switching is the ATM key that unlocks such new, bandwidth-intensive applications as digital video, desktop video conferencing, multimedia, imaging, and distance learning. Yet few (if any) books on ATM discuss switching in any depth. This valuable reference fills the void by going under the hood to explain the critical technology and capabilities that constitute the switching component of an ATM network. The authors draw on decades of industry experience to help you address the technical, economic, design, and business issues required to successfully deploy this new technology. Whether you're a communications engineers, equipment suppler, or carrier, you'll find the full range of ATM knowledge you need: an up-to-the-minute picture of ATM technology; full coverage of the underlying physical technologies necessary for deployment, e.g., the Synchronous Optical Network and various ATM Adaptation Layers; a comprehensive overview of the standards that support ATM networking; clear, generic, logical, functional views of an ATM switch; insights into the ATM products offered by major vendors, including Cisco, (Tag Switching), Ipsilon (IP switching) LANE (LAN Emulation), and MPOA (Multiprotocol over ATM); detailed case studies of actual switches as deployed in the industry; proven guidelines for costing out and designing a combined IP and ATM network. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: John Amoss, Ph.D., is a member of the technical staff at Lucent Technologies, where he is responsible for developing Lucent's data product strategy. Prior to joining Lucent he spent more than 20 years in broadband communications at Bell Labs and Bellcore. Dr. Amoss is also an Adjunct Professor of Telecommunications at Stevens Institute of Technology. Daniel Minoli is Director of Engineering and Development, Broadband Services and Internet, at the Teleport Communications Group. A former developer of broadband communications technology at Bellcore, he also teaches at Stevens Institute of Technology and New York University. Mr. Minoli has written more than 20 other books on telecommunications.
