Product Description

PARENTS KNOW THAT TECHNOLOGY is accelerating and threatening to engulf their adolescents. Yet the magnitude and implications of today’s trends remain difficult to imagine. The heart, mind, and healthy gender of your child is at stake. Can young men enter the passive land of boys & toys without being trapped until age 30? Can young girls wield the power of social networking without cementing their personalities as controllers and manipulators? Can either withstand the trickle down from the adult and college culture where sexuality is a human right, divorced from any meaningful type of relationship?

This book identifies the trends, alerts us to their exponential speed, and offers practical wisdom in leading our kids through perilous times.

A friend gave me this book; and because my kids are not yet pre-teens/teens, I really didn't think it would apply much to me or my family. I was wrong. I now realize how much what I am doing right now on the computer and in my free time is shaping what my kids will do when they are older. They see me on Facebook, and that sends the message that being online and connected every day is important and stands in for true face-to-face interaction. Kids are online, texting, and chatting at younger and younger ages now. These challenges always seemed to be in the distant future, and now I see that I have to start shaping their perspective on all of this NOW, while they're still young and receptive. I'm also shocked that, even at my fairly young age (31), I was so incredibly naive about technology and everything that's out there and available even to young children...and to what kids are doing with it! Having read this book, I feel so much better prepared to begin equipping my children (and my husband and I) for what lies ahead. I truly feel that my eyes have been opened to some very subtle messages my kids are getting that I otherwise never would have noticed. A great example in the book: When the author talks about how boys today don't muster up the guts to go talk to a girl and get to know her and ask her out...they just comb over her Facebook page to learn about her. I don't think that would've stuck out to me as unusual or a red flag, until Mr. Pearson explained that this kind of "non-relationship relating" (my term, not his) leads to "hooking up" and casual sex rather than the risk-taking investment in forming a true relationship. I can definitely say this book is not only for parents of pre-teens and teens, but also for parents of young children who want to get a headstart on protecting their kids' hearts, minds, souls through the temptations that lay ahead.

iParent is the best book I've read in a long while. I keep giving it to people, knowing they will be impacted as strongly as I have been.

Rarely have I read a parenting book that dissects our culture and how to counter it with the relevance and accuracy of iParent. Don places the current seeming-chaos of our youth culture with the trends of aggressive girls, failure to launch guys, and head-spinning moral decline into an accessible framework from which to make parenting decisions. In no way engendering fear, Don arms parents with a clear understanding of what has caused this mess and provides equally clear advice on how to raise kids counter-culturally to live fulfilling lives that glorify God and avoid the hurt that runs rampant in our youth as they fall for the many lies exposed in the book.

Another positive element of iParent is it's readability. Don draws the reader in immediately through his natural ability to weave stories into the material; the vast experience he has with kids makes his viewpoint credible and his insights invaluable.

Parents can no longer stay uninformed and hope for the best for their kids. Don Pearson gives concrete strategies to implement in coming along side teens and helping them to see clearly what's going on at school, parties, online and the culture at large, and buck these destructive trends. He also includes verses to pray over youth at the conclusion of each chapter.

This is a must read for anyone who has a heart for our kids, our culture, and our future.

Don,
Unlike some of the other people who reviewed this book, I am 18 and in college. People probably think it's funny that i'm reading a book about parenting. But its not just about that, its advice to guide young adults through this tough sexual battle with the world. My boyfriend and I recently broke up because of his porn problem, we'll call him Jake. I was devastated, he was my first boyfriend. And it's so easy to try to fill that hurt with attention from other guys.
Your book is so helpful to me, it's made me see that I need to sit back, and stop flirting to gain attention. I need to be myself and God will bring someone along side me. I realized I was sorta alpha by arranging hangouts with Jake before we dated and not letting him be the organizer. He told me that he liked me on facebook...and now I am not going to accept that. I want a guy who will be able to talk directly with me. And i don't want a guy to learn about me through facebook, rather face to face talking. Anyways, God put this book in my life at the perfect time, I know he is telling me to be patient, to not seek a relationship. Only seek relationship with him.
Here's a thought-
You have probably heard the saying "a women is most beautiful when she's in love", so true, especially when she's in love with God. In contrast with guys, God will never fail us and never break our hearts. We can be absolutely vulnerable without fear of getting hurt. I don't need a boy who thinks he is a man, I have the ultimate man! :)
I pray for all the young women out there, that you would not compromise your beliefs or values for a guy. God will bring someone for you. Pray for your future husband. And I pray for the young men that they would become men of God, they would treat women with absolute purity like it says in 1 timothy. Pray for your future wife.
This book is great not only for parents, but also for young adults who are struggling for purity in a world of temptation.
