P.O.S. - Pretty Amazing,
By A Hero (Bearsville, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ipecac Neat (Audio CD)
After seeing P.O.S. on the Pour Me Another tour (with Atmosphere and others) twice, I can truly say that there is no other rapper like him. His stage presence was vivid and energetic, emphatically spitting flows that switched from fast to slow and back again seconds later. Maybe it's the fact that he's from Minneapolis, a city that seems to be breeding a plethora of diverse and creative MC's, or maybe it's the fact that he grew up on punk rock instead of rap, but either way P.O.S. is truly something different. He shows amazing lyrical depth and poetic skill on songs such as That One (a frantic and emotional track about a relationship gone wrong), Music For Shoplifting (P.O.S.'s socio-political anthem in which he quips "Run out of toilet paper? Grab the sunday paper, wipe your ass with the president"), Little Kids (In which he weaves the story of the lives of two troubled children with vivid detail), and Duct Tape (adressing the issues he faced with his parents in the broken home of his childhood).
Throughout Ipecac Neat, the MC known as both Product Of Society and Promise Of Stress shows a Keruac-like skill for writing material that almost seems like free thought rap, but always somehow manages to stay centered around a specific theme with a steaming serving of metaphor, passion, power, and angst. From the call and response anthem Meth-Head vs. McNugget (Live, Live, Live) to the collaboration with fellow Minneapolis MC Crescent Moon, Dead Music, P.O.S.'s debut album does not disappoint.

P.O.S. Is simply Amazing,

Ha ha ha, there was absolutely no hesitation giving this the good ol' five star rating. I would give it more if possible. This CD is just flawless showcasing POS' original style and flow. This CD literally changed my life, thats how powerful the words and songs are. I saw POS in concert in Phoenix and it was the best performance I have seen in a long long time. Like the first review said, the man comes out as if he is just a stage manager or something. He brings out the old boombox and messes around on the mic. Then all of a sudden as he is talking he begins to rap and the beats kick in. POS has created a totally new and diffrent style and you cannot go wrong by buying this CD. There is no way you can hear it and not like it NO WAY. So I gurantee happy listening. All tracks are great, but the best ones for me are 1,2,4,10,15. HAVE FUN AND BUY THIS. Support the underdogs out there. This one is a hidden gem.

An instant favorite,

P.O.S. seems adept at garnering his fans through his amazing stage show, as I saw him perform the same boombox to beats to mad rappin' routine in San Francisco not long ago. The performace prompted me to pick up the album (only one left at Rasputin, a good sign?) and the album prompted me to hit repeat over and over and over again. I am a helpless hip-hop addict and this artist has vaulted instantly to the upper echelons of my personal favorites. Buy this album. If you dig good hip-hop, or even if you just dig good music, buy this freakin' album. You will not be disappointed.

WHY IS THIS THE ONLY REVIEW???,

I had the privelege of cathching the @ It Again Tour this year, which a Rhymesayers record label tour thats STILL going on if you're reading this before the end of MAY 2005. But anyways, the acts were Ground Opening, who are on Mr. Dibbs label...this group is gonna be an amazing force in the next few years, so keep a freakin lookout. Untill then, go out and order their cd "Random Corporate Swing 3"....amazing...but only for the true heads that appriciate tracks about needing a van instead of a pickup for 3 fat dudes to tour in, through sweltering texas heat...with sorta dodgy production that only a true head could really tolerate.
Anyway, second act was Pos, and when he went on stage i didn't even realize he was an emcee...honestly. He just came out with this 80's stle boombox, put it on top of the beat machine, and stood there doin a...what can only be described as a playful sound check...and then just asked if "he could rap"..and god DAMN...this man went OFF!! Catch him live if you can because his perfomance is so unique that you don't forget him...just him and his beats and fire flow that could melt barbara bush's icebox. So of course, I had to get this cd...well actually i bought the cd before he even came on because i've been trying to track it down for so long. But yes...lets get to the cd. The cd....ok..i'll put it like this....just..buy it...put it in...and let it roll...play some cards...right some rhymes...do a routine....(dj's for those who don't know)...freakin...rally a god damn protest...do whatever, because this is one of those magic few you can just let roll. EVERY TRACK is perfect...it reminds me (not his style but his refined sound) of diverse's cd ONE A.M. in that both mc's...on their debut albums...sound like they've made 6 before this one..verteran rookie's...with total command of the situation. His sound is so unique...and GET THAT "EMO RAP" bullcrap outta here. This IS NOT EMO RAP. THIS IS LIFE MUSIC....with a little rage and angst...just like he says at his shows, "he was into the Clash more than he was Biggie"...which is pretty evident in his sound....pure hip hop...but...with a much more punk...tone, for lack of a better word. if you have to know stand out tracks....um....1...2...3..4..5...6..7..8..9......you get the idea...

I guess there is much to be angry about in life, especially when one lives in the bottom strata. Thus, this album from this group. The whole album is angry from the beats to the lyrics.

Even More Amazing Live,
By Victoria L. (Georgia) - See all my reviews

I have to admit that the extent of my exposure to P.O.S was what I'd seen on Youtube. I knew he had a variety of influences, including punk, and I really enjoyed his music. However, until I saw him live on tour I had no idea of the real depths of this man's talent.
He truly has something to offer to everyone, and watching him perform live was nothing short of amazing. His energy, the energy of the crowd, the way he interacts with his audience ... it was the most enjoyable part of the day for me and I knew I had to have more! I was sitting in the back of the amphitheater, vaguely aware of a familiar sound...and slowly I became pulled in by the lyrics, the flow, the raw energy of the crowd and the man who was standing among them, mic in hand. I was hooked. After that, I decided to give his entire discography a listen, and I am stunned at what I've been missing. Is P.O.S. the best performer out there? I don't know. Is this the best rap/punk/rock album ever? That's subjective. :=) But have no doubt that it's very good, absolutely worth buying, and if you get the chance to see him live, GO. His flow, his energy and stage presence is one of the most fantastic performances I've seen ...*ever*. I've gone from a casual listener of P.O.S. to a hardcore fan. :-)

Doom the **** Tree,
By Styles (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ipecac Neat (Audio CD)
This is the album that got me excited about Minneapolis hip-hop. This was the first full-length in a long time from anybody in the Twin Cities that felt like a classic after the first listen. What is really too bad is most people outside of Minnesota wont get to see Pissed Off Stef perform with the rest of Doomtree live. Now that's a show. For now, people should try to get a hold of Sims new album "Lights Out Paris", listen to the track No Homeowners. That will give you an idea of how entertaining this crew is. Also watch for Stef's next album and a Dessa Darling full-length in the near future. Doomtree, Kanser, Big Quarters, Carnage, keep your eyes on Minnesota hip-hop.

I'de never heard of him until i saw the show lastnight. I actually enjoyed P.O.S. more than blueprint. Atmosphere was amazing.
He does have his own style that i became a fan of right away. Its funny someone else mentioned him thumb wrestling someone in the crowd. He did the same thing lastnight. The crowd was amped for him. Great performer with great lyrics.

I agree with the reviewer A Hero, that live show was off the hook. I just saw him perform in NY on 10/14, he was the opening act on the Pour Me Another tour. During the performance I made a trip to the Merch. table and picked up this CD. I dont believe hes on any super intelligent stuff or anything but this CD is great, he made me an instant fan after seeing his live show. Buy this if you like the Midwest hip hop sound Ex. Atmosphere, Heiruspecs, Oddjobs, Kanser and everyone on Rhymesayers and Interlock.
