4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but should include more set-up tools
The overlay is good, and still allows easy control of the iPod. However, most overlays come with some kind of cardboard card and a small wipe to clean the screen and help expedite the application of the overlay. This product didn't Also, the brand name is embossed into the overlay. This ends up on the side or back of the iPod, but it is somewhat annoying...

3.0 out of 5 stars Works OK, but don't pay TEN bucks for it
This product works as it should, pretty much. A couple of air bubbles are around the clickwheel (which is unavoidable), but I did not have issues with bubbles elsewhere, since I applied the film VERY carefully. I think it would be nicer if the clickwheel cover was a seperate circle than the rest of the film. But maybe that would make it peel off too easily...

Want to know what this overlay is like? You already do. Its very similar to the protective plastic that came on the front of your IPod when it was new. After comparing the protective plastic on the IPod to this overlay, I hesitated in pulling the original plastic off.

This product has several flaws. I'll go out on a limb and say its virtually impossible to apply without getting air bubbles around the click wheel. It's also not completely transparent. It dulls the look of the IPod (its glaringly obvious that your IPod is wrapped in plastic) and dims the display slightly.

I could easily live with these problems, however. The biggest problem that I had was it started peeling off within a couple of weeks. I had to start cutting off larger and larger pieces of it to prevent it from coming off completely. Granted, not everyone may have this problem. I carry my IPod around in the pocket of my blue jeans, so the overlay's going to have to put up with a little abuse. But isn't that the whole point? If I were just going to treat my IPod gingerly, why would I even need an overlay?

I recently replaced this overlay with an Invisible Shield. It costs quite a bit more (~$25 shipped), but is a far superior product. It applies without any air bubbles and completely covers the IPod. It doesn't diminish the look of my IPod and after a week, its holding up perfectly (not long, I know). Frankly, I think all of these products are grossly overpriced, but at least, I know that I won't have to buy another overlay (the invisible shield comes with a lifetime warranty). Good luck!

The film being on will make the clickwheel scrolling feel somewhat less sensitive. I don't find that be be worse...just different. What can be hard to get used to is that there will no longer be a texture difference between the "matte" wheel and the "glossy" center select button & the rest of the iPod - making it harder to find those controls blindly (without looking at it). Only slightly annoying for me, because I often use my iPod in the dark before going to sleep.

I have had this on my iPod for 3 months now, and it is still in good shape, no tears or signs of coming loose...so it's good quality. (I keep it in a leather case as well, but constantly have to take it in & out to use it with my FM transmitter, so I'd have thought it would have started to peel by now...but it's pretty tough.)

Also, I picked this product up (the same Macally brand) at Wal-Mart for less than five bucks. If you get it there, you've got the added benefit of being able to return it w/o shipping costs if you really hate it!

P.S. I bought this overlay through one of the third-party sellers, mac pro, and I did receive the overlay as pictured above in the product description. Even with shipping, cheaper than Amazon.

Bought it from an Amazon Market Seller. Price was low to make up for high shipping cost. I received the brand name promised and plastic is crisp and clear but I did notice that dust seems to be creeping up under the lower edge. I mainly use my ipod when traveling to listen to books-- latest car has an audio input jack so I don't have to fiddle with finding a clear FM stations any more-- so it gets exposed to a good amount of dust. If this bothers you then you should look at a sleeve type protector.

1.0 out of 5 stars Description and image are deceiving, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Ipod Video Clear Protective Overlay (Office Product)
When this product arrived I discovered it is not a Macally brand overlay. It is also not 1 piece that covers the front, back, and sides of the ipod. It is 2 individual pieces that don't even cover the whole front or back if my ipod.

I specifically purchased this item because it covers all but the top and bottom of my ipod. I have had a genuine Macally ipod overlay (just like the one in the picture above) and was very pleased. This item has no brand name and in my opinion looks to be made of stiff brittle plastic that will crack easily. I am very disappointed.
