Ypofero (I struggle),
By
This review is from: Ipofero (Audio CD)
As can be seen by the reviews, Greek fans appear to have a pretty passionate love-hate relationship with Despoina Vandi and Anna Vissi. If the question is asked about the impact that these artists are having in making popular Greek music accessible to those outside Greece, the whole issue gets turned on its head. Both artists are tremendously successful in that regard -- something all Greeks should take pride in. Those who get drawn into that terrific music by artists like Vandi, are far more likely to discover the other treasures pointed out by Despoina's detractors.Written by Fivos, Ypofero is one of those songs that is instantly accessible -- so much so that our teenage daughter grabbed the CD and claimed it as her own, and would play the song first thing upon waking up in the morning. And no wonder, since it's hard to keep from getting up and moving once the song starts.

Ipofero is a great Greek pop music CD. Again, she beats the pants off of Vissi. Vissi is a has been as far as I am concerned. When you listen to it, make sure you move the furniture out of the way, because you will definately want to dance to it!

Everything was really promising at the beginning : a cute singer with mediterennean looks and a decent voice . Although she singed ordinary "laiko" pop songs she never sounded as plain and cheap as other greek pop divas like Efi Sarri and Antzela Dimitriou . As years went by though , she became something like a bad immitation of another not-that-good-anymore female singer , Anna Vissi . Yes , she started selling more albums but at the same time she became less exciting both to watch and to listen .
"Ipofero" is the album that finally made her a star in this country . While listening it , it's hard to understand why . Her writter Foivos had obviously ran out of ideas . Here he mostly recycles past tunes he wrote for other greek artists ( " Egw den kano tetia pragmata " ) when he doesn't [copy] foreign singers' hooks and melodies ( the hit-single "Ipofero" is a typical example ) . The lyrics often border on the ridicoulous ( " i have these bold sex fantasies you wouldn't believe of" she...confesses at one point ) while the voice loses all it's charm while constantly trying to show off it's power . It's not encouriging to see that in a country like Greece with so many great unknown musicians , an album as depthless as this can become a hit all thanks to an aggressive marketing campain. |
