Book Description

February 2000

A comprehensive study of the Middle East's most strategic country, this book is set against the background of the Islamic heritage of Iran and the rise and fall of the Pahlavi dynasty. It describes the various phases through which the Islamic revolution has passed, gives an incisive account of the Gulf War, and provides an historical survey of Iran’s relations with the West, the Soviet bloc, and other countries of the region.

Reviews:

–Martin Woollacott, Guardian

“Hiro’s work is encyclopedic.”
–Edward Mortimer, The Times

“Leaves the reader with a deeper understanding of Iran.”
–Cal McCrystal, Sunday Times

“A competent, sensible narrative of the eventful last half-dozen years…Hiro writes with color and excitement.”
–Patrick Seale, Observer

“Readable and compact political history of the Iranian revolution…One of the engaging features of this book is that it provides an altogether coherent view of the Iranian revolution.”
–Donald Shojai, Los Angeles Times

Iran Under the Ayatollahs is a thorough account of a crucial era still widely misunderstood…Hiro treats the events and characters with neutrality.”
–Robin Wright, Christian Science Monitor
