Horesh was born in Baghdad in 1920 and left Iraq in 1936. His first work in intelligence was voluntarily gathering information of military value for the British to aid in the Allied invasion of Syria and Lebanon during World War II. Later, ostensibly a member of the British forces fighting the Palestinian underground, he secretly served the underground, giving it information about British actions and policies toward the Jews in Palestine. After Israel's 1948 War of Independence, Horesh joined the Mossad, Israel's intelligence service, and served in Turkey and Austria under an assumed Arab identity. Although Horesh tends to get a bit preachy in attempting to justify his beliefs, his memoir reads like a real-life James Bond. George Cohen
