Loved the 'sights!,
By Sheila (Long Island) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Insight Guides Ireland (Insight Guide Ireland) (Paperback)
On planning a trip to Ireland (return trip for me, first trip for my kids) I wanted to dig up as much info as possible. With so little time (and money) I wanted the most of what I had!! After securing the Eyewitness guides and the Frommers guides, I stumbled upon Insights and was so impressed!! It not only was a guide, but a reading book as well. The pictures by far are the best!! Looking through it makes me want to be there on my trip, NOW! Let's just say, I HAVE to own this one!! It's costly, more than the others, but well worth putting into your collection! Slante'

A practical and invaluable resource for getting the most out of a visit to the Emerald Isle,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ireland (Step by Step) (Paperback)
One of the major joys of traveling abroad is going on walks to observe the sights, sounds, and people up close and personal. That's why travelers to Ireland will especially value "Ireland Step By Step" which is a handy 128-page compendium showcasing sixteen walks and tours complete with thoroughly 'user friendly' maps. Of special note is the profusion of tips and advice on where to eat and drink, shopping, the nightlife, and the culture. Enhanced with themed tours, a free pullout map with street index, and practical information on a variety of hotel accommodations suitable for diverse budgets, "Ireland Step By Step" is a practical and invaluable resource for getting the most out of a visit to the Emerald Isle.

Slick - and useless,
This review is from: Ireland (Step by Step) (Paperback)
This book is subtitled "the country's best walks and tours", but the only walks are entirely within cities (and there are lots of other books that do a much better job with city tours in Ireland - Walking Dublin (Interlink Walking Guides) is just one example). Almost every one of the 16 tour descriptions says, at some point, "a car is essential for this tour". If you want a book with walks in rural Ireland, skip this one and try The Independent Walker's Guide to Ireland: 35 Memorable Walks in Ireland's Green Countryside (The Independent Walker Series). Also, this book is one of those that look like an advertisement for Adobe Pagemaker - lots of slick formatting, heavy glossy paper, little useful information. If you're never actually going to make it to Ireland, you might enjoy browsing through this one, but if you really go, you'll want something more substantial (in terms of content) and less substantial (in terms of weight) to take with you.

Will be visiting Northern Ireland early next year for 2 months. Book is very informative, and makes the trip we are looking forward to much more interesting. Would recommend it, or any of the series by Discovery.
