WoW! What a fun CD. What is obviously a very ambitious effort on Ninas part, she brings to life a collection of songs spanning from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, done in the 'swing' style along with the amazing Capital Dance Orchestra. Nina sounds wonderful (a vocal coach is credited in the booklet by the way) and is having a great time here. She makes these songs hers in true Nina Hagen fashion and is having fun with them. Whether its the very rousing 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schon' 'Flat Foot Floogie' 'Yes Sir' or 'Halli Hallo', or the more meloncholy 'But Not For Me' or 'Happiness(done both in German and English versions)'. After her unusual departure in "Big Band Explosion" I was a little surprised to see her do another collection of 'vintage' music. But this time around she kicks it up a few notches and really hits the nail on the head. If you liked "Big Band Explosion" then you will love "Irgendwo Auf Der Welt". I highly recommend this CD of very infectious music that Nina has made timeless. The CD also comes in a very nifty 'super jewel box' jewel case, and includes a glossy booklet with lots of great pictures of Nina, plus all the lyrics to the songs. Buy and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy, May 24, 2006

This CD is what it is beautiful musical art. This CD is worth it for the photos alone. Her voice is strong and seductive. Nina puts her passionate mark on these wonderful songs. Nina did not write these songs and they have been recorded many times before, but it is her sass and personality that give them punch. If you can't dance to these songs then you are dead below the waist !

5.0 out of 5 stars once a torch singer, always a torch singer, May 12, 2007

I am a long term Nina fan, and this work is true to form. She uses her whole range and has her humorous take on the songs, but this is also a very traditional "big band" sort of album. The band is very good as well as the recording itself, but if you are stuck in punk mode then you might be bored with this work as the punk touches are small. I find her voice and vocal stylings fascinating, as usual.

I like Big Band Explosion, but it took me a little while to get this CD. What I realized was that the music has a feel subtly different from the swing style I have heard on old records. The tunes are played almost as if they are classical pieces. This sort of thing doesn't often work as it stiffens the music. But between Nina and the musicians, no such thing happens. It comes across as sentimental in a way, but really is a celebration of kind thoughts. In it's own way, it has a sort of cosmic feel about it.

I played a couple of tunes from the disc at the Faerie Freedom Village at SF Pride the summer of '06 and couples immediately began to waltz and dance in other ways very different from the usual club dancing I see. An atmosphere of intimacy was created that was soft and sweet. I found myself waving back and forth peacefully.

This CD is not for the impatient. It hits slowly and softly. It is a time travel, but not to the past. It takes you to a special place in your mind. It makes me wonder why some dance music has gotten so tough and macho. It lets what comes natural to do so without shoving it in your face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia, February 21, 2008

I lost listening to Punk Nina Hagen after I moved out of NYC back into Puerto Rico where they mostly play the American Popular songs and of course, latin Music. It took me almost 20 yrs to rediscover her (and to my surprise she keeps herself very active!)
I love band music for my father would always play Tommy Dorsey, the Andrews sisters, Judy Garland, etc.I had the opportunity to listen to a couple of songs from Marlene Dietrich and Lotte Lenia. I love that 1920-1930 German Berlin-cabaret style, and this is what seems to me Hagen does... anybody saw Bob Fosse's Cabaret with Lisa Minelli? You will see a parallelism in the style.
Although Hagen's voice has become huskier, still it is a great voice. A lot of nostalgia and excellent interpretation by good musicians. I think Nina helped produce the record.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing voice, January 11, 2007

After hearing about Ms. Hagan on NPR I listened to everything I could. The early recordings although not quite my style were very interesting. I came away with the feeling that this was a wonderful voice. This CD only emphasized this for me. The mixture of the German and English was wonderful to listen to. Her voice can really transport one`s mind to other times and places. I only hope that this is not the last we hear from her. Who knows what could be next?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vocal Treasure, April 28, 2009

I didn't know anything about Nina Hagen until I heard her version of Ava Maria once on a trip to Russia. I was emotionally struck by the richness and power of her vocals. I made it a point to hunt down the recording when I got back to the States, but it proved to be more difficult than I anticipated. When I finally got the CD, I was totally surprised to find that Ava Maria was an anomally to Nina's usual punk-rock style. While I found some of that interesting, especially New York, New York, I thought that Nina is best when she just SINGS! That's why this recording was worth every penny of the $25(+) it took to get the beautifully packaged brand-new CD shipped over from Germany. What a treasure! Don't get me wrong, I'm not stuck in a swing groove, but anytime you get a chance to hear Nina really excercise her amazing vocal abilities and range, you are in for a tearing-up treat. She'll stimulate your dopamine flow. We've got to get her on a circuit here in the States so more people will have the chance to appreciate one of the greatest vocalists ever.
