5.0 out of 5 stars Because everyone's Irish once a year...
There once was an album of green,

Full of songs about beer and poteen,

Twas great start to finish,

Likely 'cause of the Guinness,

So I give it five stars on your screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars This cd turned my Puerto Rican friend into an Irishman!, December 31, 2001
This review is from: Irish Drinking Songs (Audio CD)
This is my favorite St. Patrick's Day cd and it's always a winner at parties. Top 40 shmorty...play this at your parties no matter what the crowd and watch all your friends become happy drunk irishmen right before your eyes as the party goes on.

The Dubliners do a few songs on this cd, but most are performed by the Clancy Brothers who are my absolute favorites. Powerful vocals and great lively music. Lotsa humor thrown in too.

Whiskey in the Jar performed by the Dubliners is Great!
Not too sure what song two is about, but the title is Beer, Beer, Beer.
Water is alright in Tay...Perfect song for drinkin'(especially a cold pint of Guiness).
The list goes on and on and then you get to my personal favorite: Finnegan's Wake...Fighting and drinking and people returning from the dead...A wonderful family get together song performed nicely by the Clancy Brothers. Lot's of comical stories in the music as in Juice of the Barley and Finnegan's Wake. The Parting Glass should not be played until nearly the end of any party...it's truly a parting song. Skip this until the end (I actually love this song, but when you hear it you will understand what I mean).

If you really want to liven up the party and you cater to a younger crowd, mix this cd with the punkish Dropkick Murphys music. They do some Irish folk covers like Rocky Road to Dublin, Finnegan's Wake etc...

Bainne na mo is an gamna and the juice of the barley for me!

Enjoy this cd and Don't Drink and Drive!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Phenomenon called Irish Drinking songs, October 26, 2000

If you have not heard these wonderful drinking songs, you have missed out on the CD of your life. This CD means so much to me that I cannot even describe it in words. When my ex broke up with me I grabbed a gallon of Irish whiskey and played this album while locked in my room sobbing. I stayed there for a couple days. When I emerged from my room I was a changed woman. Let me tell you something, this album changed my life. That is all I can say about it.

Each of the songs on this CD is worth listening to and singing poorly over a couple of pints. The fast paced songs are mixed well with a few slower ones, and each song is a gem.

This is a wonderful album that makes it impossible not to perk up and sing. The stories in the songs always bring a smile to my face and the Clancy Bros. harmony is delightful.

This is an album full of classic Irish Drinking songs. What is not to like about that? If you like Irish Drinking songs, you will like this album. Don't expect the Dropkick Murphies or something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, joyful songs you can listen to forever. I already have..., February 2, 2010
This review is from: Irish Drinking Songs (Audio CD)
You'll have to find this item in a CD bargain bin somewhere, as I did last week for four bucks. As a Clancy Brothers fan since I was 15, exactly 50 years ago, I've owned all these performances on record, cassette or CD and over the decades I must have heard these tunes literally hundreds of times. I am only one-eighth Irish, and I like alcoholic drinks probably only one-eighth as much as most Irishmen, but I love the songs and the Clancy arrangements of them. Four of the 16 tracks here are done by The Dubliners, another good group, but the Brothers and Tommy Makem pretty much invented "Irish Folk Music for Large American Audiences" in the late '50's, and my heart has belonged to them since their first appearance on the old Ed Sullivan Sunday Night variety show on television, in the theater that now hosts David Letterman's late night frolic. The only reason I withhold a fifth star is that a couple of the tracks don't reproduce perfectly in my car, because they start with a narrator who comes out of one channel at too low a volume. That may be the fault of my old auto audio system and not the manufacturer. However, a couple of these performances come from a Carnegie Hall Clancy concert and were not considered good enough to make the original LP, although they have been issued on a CD in recent years. Still, pay less than seven or eight bucks for this, get a used copy, and enjoy it. Too much alcohol can easily be a tragedy in real life, but in Irish lyrics, it is a fine thing altogether.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Irish Music, March 29, 2007
This review is from: Irish Drinking Songs (Audio CD)
If you are new to the genre of Irish music, or just to the Dubliners and Clancy/Makem, then I would suggest this album. The selection of songs is great. Just remember, this is a Drinking Songs album. Don't expect any ballads. A note to Clancy/Makem fans: the tracks "Tim Finnegan's Wake", and "The Moonshiner" along with the introductions to "Juice of the Barley" and "Jug of Punch" are all previously unreleased material from the album "In Person at Carnegie Hall"
