The way history ought to be written, April 30, 2009
This review is from: An Irish History of Civilization (Paperback)
This is a wonderful set. Akenson is a terrific writer, witty as only an Irishman (or at least an Irish lover) can be, and he gives such a full picture of the expansion of the Western world, primarily the British empire. He holds no punches, but delivers them with wit and style. The presentation is in vignettes, so each chapter is short. He relies upon numerous angles and people's stories to weave his version of history. It is hard to keep up with all the different names, as they keep coming and going all through the narrative, but that really does not matter. Even though the volumes run to 1500 pages together, it is fast reading, not at all the slog that history books can be. If you have even a remote interest in history, but you simply like good writing and good books, order these without delay. You won't be disappointed.
