Book Description

March 1999
Dermot Michael Coyne isn't sure what he's gotten himself into. Marriage to Nuala Anne McGrail, that beautiful and vivacious "Celtic witch", a spitfire gifted with second sight, may be more than Dermot can take. Nuala has a successful singing career now, with a top-selling CD. She's been invited to sing at "Irish Aid", an international charity event in Dublin. But the plane hasn't even landed in Ireland before she has another one of her "spells" -- about the assassination of O'Higgins, the man who succeeded Michael Collins.

That O'Higgins was gunned down on the way to mass is generally known, but when Nuala gets on the trail, secrets start leaking from all over. Torrid affairs, secret loves, and liasons that ended in violence have left restless spirits everywhere. Nuala must do all that she (and poor Dermot) can do to bring the truth to light.

And there are always people who want to snuff out that light -- and its source -- to keep the truth hidden. Dermot thinks things may be much too dangerous this time. He suggests that they really should leave things be, but there's no telling Nuala anything once her mind is made up.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sexy, foul-mouthed singer Nuala Anne McGrail and her deferential husband, Dermot Michael Coyne, are back in another emerald-hued mystery (after Irish Whiskey). Since Nuala Anne's folk-singing career has taken off, Dermot has quit the commodities exchange in favor of writing and fawning over his wife; so when her new fame leads to an invitation to sing in her homeland's Irish Aid concert, he comes along. On the flight over from Chicago to Dublin, the fey Nuala Anne has disturbing visions of a young woman in a burning castle and of a man assassinated on his way to Mass. Dermot's investigation reveals that the man was Kevin O'Higgins, successor to Irish rebel leader Michael Collins. Dermot continues delving into the history of Irish-British troubles (documents are quoted verbatim) to reveal a series of secret scandals and affairs. That's intriguing material, but the novel's momentum is halted time and again by Nuala Anne's preoccupation with her psychic flashes and with Dermot's determination to relieve his bride's obsession with beating him at golf by giving her an orgasm. In the end, Greeley's latest proves a confounding mix of sentimental Irish politics and puerile sexuality, of appeal only to those with a yen for anything Greeley or Eire green.

From Booklist

Another supremely entertaining mystery-romance from the prolific Andrew Greeley. The fourth installment in the Nuala Anne McGrail series chronicles the exploits of the sprightly, newly married protagonist and her agreeably accommodating husband, Dermot Michael Coyne. After launching a successful singing career, Nuala Anne agrees to participate in a charity benefit being staged in her native Ireland. When Nuala and Dermot arrive in Dublin, they are besieged by an avidly anti-American media and an inept gang of would-be kidnappers. After charming the media bulldogs and foiling the bungled abduction attempt, they turn their attention to solving a mystery rooted in Ireland's troubled past. Endowed with the mystical ability to virtually relive former events, Nuala employs her psychic gift to uncover the identities of the men who murdered Kevin O'Higgins, heir-apparent to Michael Collins, in 1927. In addition to posing a perplexing historical puzzle, Greeley also interweaves a charming romantic subplot into the story line, as the newlyweds endeavor to adjust to married life and to each other. Like Father Blackie Ryan, Nuala Anne is a delightfully fey and unconventional sleuth guaranteed to appeal to Greeley fans charmed by the author's unabashed and inimitable brand of Irish blarney. 4.0 out of 5 stars Ireland, history, mystery and romance..the perfect book, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Irish Mist: A Nuala Anne McGrail Novel (Hardcover)
Drawn to the Irish connection, I was delighted to find an historical connection as well. To stumble upon an author able to create around both my loves is a dream come true! I could not put this book down. Greeley's description of the main characters paints a portrait so vivid, I feel that I truly know them. Likewise, he takes you to Ireland with such verbal mastery and geographic preciseness, I felt as if I were there. This was my first Greeley novel...discovered quite by accident. I have already purchased Irish Gold, Irish Lace and Irish Whiskey and can not wait to begin another priceless journey through Greeley's words.

3.0 out of 5 stars a visit with old friends, July 29, 1999

This review is from: Irish Mist: A Nuala Anne McGrail Novel (Hardcover)
I am a long time reader of Greeley's works (fictional and non-fictional. I admire his attempt to offer insight into the Gospel and grace through his novels. So, this review is from a supporter (morally and through the large library of his works that I have purchased over the years).

Irish Mist is several stories in one. There is the relationship between Nuala Ann and Dermot as they adjust to married life. There is a trip into Irish history. There is also a contemporary suspense story that provides a context for the other two stories. Having read all of the other Naula Ann stories, this installment was a pleasant addition to my growing appreciation of these characters. Their adjustments to married life came across as both realistic and endearing. The trip into Irish history was also well written and fun.

The only part of the story that was disappointing was the contemporary suspense story. It provided unlikely and incompetent villains and really didn't add much to the overall story. The contemporary suspense elements in all of the other Naula Ann stories were much better. For me the primary interest in this work is the development of the main characters. In that regard, it is a satisfying addition to my Greeley library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A walk in the Irish (mist) rain, March 12, 2000

Another enjoyable read by a man who combines wit, wisdom, spirituality, grace and mystery as no-one else can. This latest installment in the series takes us on another trip through the IRISH TROUBLES in a fashion that is informative, thought-provoking and forgiving. The light-hearted and humouruos account of Nuala and Dermott's attempts to be good spouses is both tender and endearingly famialiar to any new love. Well worth a read.
