5.0 out of 5 stars "Does your wife never let you talk at home?", March 26, 2011
This review is from: Irish Pub Crack (Paperback)
You might have a little trouble finding this little book .It is quite small, about the size of a typical pocketbook and only 92 pages.Don't let its small size fool you into thinking it would not be worth your while in finding. It is much more than the typical little Irish joke book,of which there are an unlimited number. Most cultural joke joke books are little more than a compliation of jokes by an editor or comedian. This one is different for the simple reason that it was put together by Eileen Boyle, publican or owner of the Castle Bar in Domore,County Down in Northern Ireland.Local pubs, such as Castle Bare are virtually everywhere in Ireland. It is common for a tiny village of a few hundred to have several such pubs. They are almost like a small club, with a small number of loyal costomers (really all friends)who join together on a daily basis for what they describe as "the Crack".The most important person in such a pub is the owner, bar tender or the publican.Everything that goes on in the community is front and center in the talk or crack.Crack consists of news, stories, gossip, jokes ,trivia, songs, music, politics, religion or anything else that goes on.After years of being a publican,Eileen has put together this book to give you the feel what crack in a local pub is all about. There are a goodly number of her favorite jokes from over the years, but she gives a lot more.Amazing facts, are great discussion starters, such as "In 1979 snow fell on the Sahara Desert" ,The song sung most frequently in the world is 'Happy Birthday to you',and on and on.Then there is a section of 49 Brainteasers, sections on lies, statistics, myths, another section of 27 quizzes, more jokes, more facts, trivia ,quizzes, more jokes, etc. That is what crack is all about and never ends in the pub.Everyone joins in with the songs, stories, gossip or whatever and that is why the publican is so important ;because she hears all, and partakes in all the cracK.The Irish have a word that when they use it ;so well describes something that rises above it all and that word is "brilliant".It is used throught the english speaking world;but only in Iteland is it used in the ultimate sense.
So to put it bluntly, this little tome is "BRILLIANT!!".
