About the Author

City historian John Garvey, author of Arcadia Publishing's San Francisco Police Department, along with archaeologist Karen Hanning, have culled more than 200 vintage photographs of the city's early Irish from various archives. Together these images tell the story of an influential group of San Franciscans whose culture has long been a critical, colorful, and glorious part of this city's heritage.

I am Irish and live in SF so I thought I would be very interested in this book. I also love all things historic, this book however seems to be very focused on a few different San Francisco/Irish families. This may be due to the poor research or because there was only limited material available to the writer at the time but either way I think a city with such a large and vast Irish history should deserve a better book. There are some great pictures and stories but as I said they seemed to be focused around a few families rather then the Irish community as a whole.

Although the images are interesting, as the other reviewer noted, the book focused on a handful of families. Also, there were a number of small but significant errors, eg: Thomas Cahill was not the longest serving SFPD chief, that distinction belongs to Patrick Crowley who served two terms (1866-1873 & 1879-1897). Another annoying issue was the misidentification of some people featured in photographs, eg: The mounted patrolman who later became chief was actually, Michael Mitchell. The author is proud of his heritage and that is evident, but a better researched and more diverse presentation would have made the book better.
