Kate Binchy, Aidan Gillen, Anthony Jackson, and Fiona Shaw, the readers of this rich and varied selection of 14 Irish short stories, bring a keen ear for the pathos, humor and setting of the stories they narrate. They also have a gift for storytelling: inhabiting a story and making it sound as if it were their own, told for the first time. Given the literary and oratorical skills represented, the only complaint is the near-nonexistent liner notes, which tell nothing of the authors, the stories or the readers. Nonetheless, perhaps the only thing to top these stories on tape would be sitting with Kate, Aidan, Anthony, Fiona and a few rounds of Guinness in a pub in Dublin, hearing them spin these tales in person.
