5.0 out of 5 stars This alblum was a pleasant surprise
Great CD. I discovered Brian quite by accident - I'd been a fan of Delta Goodrem for a few months, and she has a duet with Brian (Almost Here, and yes it's on this alblum), so I knew him as the male voice in that, but that was it... then one day when I was in Auckland, New Zealand on a study-abroad, I got on the wrong bus while going to meet some of my friends to hang out...

1.0 out of 5 stars Just total terrible this CD, disgusted beyond words!
I can't get what peeps find so good with this so terrible CD of the Ex Westlifer Brian McFadden. It may appear many lack the musical/emotional sensitivity nowdays, thinking everything is great, how sad. After somebody gave it to me, and one so unbearable listen, I just threw it away, found Brians voice, lyrics, music and all some of the worst heard to date, and to top it...

Great CD. I discovered Brian quite by accident - I'd been a fan of Delta Goodrem for a few months, and she has a duet with Brian (Almost Here, and yes it's on this alblum), so I knew him as the male voice in that, but that was it... then one day when I was in Auckland, New Zealand on a study-abroad, I got on the wrong bus while going to meet some of my friends to hang out after class, and so I got off at the first Starbucks we passed since that was a familiar location, and across the street I heard music coming out of a music store... and there was a huge crowd... and it turns out Brian was doing an In-Store preformance/cd signing there in just over an hour from when I arrived... so I hung out there until he showed up, and I got to hear all of his alblum being played and a few songs that he did live (including one he'd only sang once prior to that in-store), and I bought a copy of Irish Son and had him sign it.

In summary, I feel this is a great alblum and that Brian is really nice. My favourite songs on this alblum are Real To Me, Irish Son, Sorry Love Daddy, Walking Into Walls, and Pull Myself Away.

I live in the USA and although I heard of the group Westlife, it was not music I listened to. But one day I was on the internet searching the UK charts for new music and came across Irish Son by Brian Mcfadden. I was immediately a fan. I looked for more songs of his. His sound is fresh and every song on the album is one I can listen to. Normally you are lucky to have two songs that you want to listen to over and over. This album is full of songs you can listen to and it never gets boring. I know some people bash him because of his past boyband connections, but Brian has grown into a great artist. I hope he soon hits the USA with a tour. I would love to see a show. Thanks Amazon for selling his CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Star of His Own, May 31, 2005
This review is from: Irish Son (Audio CD)
I was devasted when I heard Brian McFadden was to leave Westlife, who are simply the best band alive in this world. So yeah, I was horrified, n I just couldn't wait until his album was released.

And when I got my hands on it, I wasn't let down in any way. It's often a wonder why Brian hid his songwriting skills when he was still part of the band. His husky voice, accompanied with the sad lyrics of the love ballads, just makes you swoon.

Obviously he's been through quite a rough time, thus resulting in his decision to leave the band. All the songs which have lyrics from the heart, especially "Sorry Love Daddy" and "Just Be True to Your Woman" are extremely heartfelt, and brought tears to my eyes when I first heard them. "Irish Son" and "Real to Me" are songs referring to his childhood and times at Westlife respectively.

What Brian McFadden has as a songwriter is the ability to make sense of his lyrics. Some modern songwriters finish a song, and end up not knowing what it is actually about. However, this is not the case. Every song tells a story, whether it's in detail, emotion or pure abstract.

The final duet, with sweetheart Delta Goodrem, takes my breath away every time I hear it. The instumental arrangements really showcase Brian's sexy but boyish voice, while the sudden softness makes Delta sound like an angel. When they sing the harmonies, it's magic. They click together so easily. No wonder they're a match made in heaven.

Anyway, Irish Son doesn't disappoint at all, and I'd recommend it to all people who like to listen to ballads, or those who are Westlife fans, because you can't help feeling sympathetic for him. But he needs none of that--Brian McFadden is a true star of his own now.

4.0 out of 5 stars love songs for the brokenhearted, January 21, 2005
This review is from: Irish Son (Audio CD)
I was already a fan of Brian McFadden going into this album, but I would have to say he has surpassed my expectations. It delves much deeper into the music styles McFadden himself is a fan of, rather than sticking to the tired ex-boyband solo efforts, full of covers and bubblegum lovesongs. This is pretty heavy stuff, covering the breakup of his marriage(Lose Lose Situation), his guilt at exposing his daughters to divorce(Sorry Love Daddy), and his disappointments of being raised within the Catholic Church(Irish Son). The closest thing to a love ballad on this disc is the duet with Delta Goodrem (Almost here) which pairs his rocky tenor with her sweet, delicate soprano for a surprisingly good mesh of despair in love lost.

This is an album I would recommend to more than just pop fans. His honesty brings a note of sadness and sincereity to this disc (he wrote most of the tracks) and it rings true with anyone who's survived a bitter breakup. It's more in the vein of Gavin deGraw or even Coldplay than Westlife.

Don't let the former boybander tag keep you from this. It's well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you hate Westlife, you'll love McFadden, January 11, 2005

This is my first review here on Amazon and it took an album like this one to get me to write it. To start with I'll have to confess that I dont like Westlife at all since I mostly listen to rock and hiphop. Well, guess you can call me a 'softer' guy since I found this album. Every song from the sorrowful "sorry, love daddy" to his hit "real to me" are way to easy to fall into and start to sing along that you start to wonder if there are any bad songs at all on his album.

Get it, it's not an option.

Came across this Cd at the store. Was able to listen to it there and purchased it immediately. I don't think there is a bad song on it. Some are better than others of course but very consistant through and through. Best songs are "Irish Son", "Real to Me", and "Almost Here." I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good,Very good,But Not Great, May 2, 2006
By
This review is from: Irish Son (Audio CD)
Brian McFadden was a key member of the Irish boyband Westlife and in his songs in this, his first album as a solo artist,we catch glimpses of the influence and style of the hugely sucessful group. Brian,as you may recall, actually broke away from the band to spend more time with his wife but within two months of his departure from Westlife, Brian McFadden released his first solo single "Real to Me", one of the few genuinely great songs in this CD.

"Real to Me" is a fantastic single with a melodious music complementing the powerful lyrics. Another track that exhibits the array of talent of this Irishman is "Irish Son"---composed on a patriotic theme that fires up the sense of nationalism, this title-track is a great way to start the CD. "He's No Hero" and " Sorry Love Daddy" invoke a softer kind of music with an air of melancholy about them. Actually I feel that Brian McFadden's voice is suited to such types of songs and not to fast and loud music as in " Lose Lose Situation" and "Pull Myself Away", which in my opinion, sound wan and emotionless. "Demons", "Be True To Your Woman", "Walking Disaster" and " Walking Into Walls" are good songs but somehow fail to capture our heart and eventually passed by leaving an expression of a mere shallow depth of enjoyment. The best song in "Irish Son" in my judgement is "Almost Here", a great duet by two amazing vocalists. Delta Gudrem and Brian McFadden compilment each other exquisitely in this track and as the music moves from a soft to a mid-tempo rhythm and the lyrics become more and more touching, you are invariably led to accept and imbibe the profound emotion and sentimentality of this song.

Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Justin Timberlake all broke away from their respective groups and launched massively successful solo careers. Brian McFadden too has endeavoured to acomplish just that and has produced a mixed bag in his maiden album "Irish Son". But he has got more to do if he wants to be a real heavyweight in the arena of Pop solo artist since as more time elapses, people will tend to associate him less and less with Westlife and then Brian has to create and sustain and individual identity bereft of past glories. Brian McFadden has the talent, the voice and the intensity to establish himself as a great male solo vocalist but for that he would've to pay attentiion to what types of music he creates and the sensibitity of his songs. I feel that his voice doesn't allow him to make all and any kinda of music and the Irishman must stick to this limitation and not try something that goes beyond, not atleast in the next two CDs.

Heard a few cuts, from this album on the radio. After ordering it, I'm now wondering how long it will take for Brian to be a truely big star. After listening to the album a few times, I am unable to find a song I don't like. I guess you can tell I love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first CD I have loved in Y ears, March 2, 2006
This review is from: Irish Son (Audio CD)
I was living in the UK when the album was released, a year ago. I Loved the couple of songs I had heard on the radio, and when I moved back to the states, I found myself longing to hear them again. I purchased the CD, and to my surprise, I liked every song on it. I have owned this CD for 7-8 months now, and can honestly say that not a day goes by that I don't listen to it.

I found this CD to be refreshing. It is much better than most of the music released these days, and much better than what is being released in the UK. If you want to hear nothing but remakes the UK is the place to go.
