Editorial Reviews

Iron Curtain was a minimal wave band from Santa Barbara, CA, who played regularly in the Los Angeles underground music scene. They were heavily influenced by The Cure, OMD, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk. The band released several records in small quantities even though they had a great fan base, and hence over the years these releases have gained mass cult appeal which has driven the prices of used copies up into the thousands. After several years of searching for Steve Fields (front man for the group), Pylon Records is pleased to bring the entire catalog into print for the first time on CD. Featured on the CD is the cult classic "The Condos", the goth-club-friendly track "Tarantula Scream", and the much-sought-after track "Legalize Heroin", which has a stark resemblance to My Bloody Valentine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appreciated Reissue of Obscure 80s Synth, November 27, 2007

Even though I was buying records at the time this music was new and available, because it was not distributed very well, I missed it completely. It took me twenty years to find out what I was missing, and that was because I heard "Telephone" and "First Punk Wars" on an internet radio station (East Village Radio).

If you like Ultravox (when Midge Ure was with them) or Orchestral Manoeuvers (OMD), which is a better comparison for their sound than Joy Division or Kraftwerk would be, then you will like the sounds you hear on this reissue CD. It's a good quality reissue using the original tapes. The music is more melodic than one might expect, somewhat dreamy and atmospheric, and nice punchy drums & bass synth which makes it great clubby dance music. If this is what you like, give these guys a listen and find out what you've been missing.

I recently stumbled across this release in my quest for all great things new wave and 80s. Listening to the track "First Punk Wars" is one of the better things I have done to my ears and brain in the past couple of years. I don't hear much Joy Division/New Order or the Cure in these songs. There is a uniqueness and honesty to these tracks that is fascinating and I don't understand why this band remained so obscure. I'd unfortunately never heard of them until quite recently. The relentless drone and pulse of tracks like "The Condos" and "Tarantula Scream" are hypnotic to say the least. "Anorexia" and "Terror Story" are quite disturbing but also beautiful. One of my favorite albums of the last 5 years.

track listing:
1. Tarantula Scream
2. First Punk Wars
3. The Condos
4. Love Can Never Die
5. Shadow
6. The Burning
7. Terror Story
8. Anorexia
9. Like A Family
10. Telephone
11. Legalize Heroin
12. The Condos (Live)
