Ages 6-9. Taken away from his parents at age eight by the dangerous wild man Iron Hans (actually a king under a wicked enchantment), a little prince fails Iron Hans' trials and is sent to make his way in the world. Taking a position as gardener in a palace, he soon wins the heart of the princess and with the help of Iron Hans and his own boldness, the prince leads an army into battle and wins her hand in marriage as well. Readers may wonder when the boyish prince grew into the manly warrior, a transformation the text ignores and the illustrations deal with by aging him a few years with each turn of the page. Technically proficient though curiously detached from the tale, the color-pencil drawings decorate the long text with ornate borders and dramatic full-page spreads. Libraries with demand for illustrated versions of the Grimms' individual fairy tales should consider this one.
