2.0 out of 5 stars Not really a soundtrack
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy AC/DC. But slapping some Iron Man graphics on the cover art of an AC/DC compilation doesn't make a movie soundtrack. Terribly disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Iron Man 2 songs, April 25, 2010
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
If you are not familiar with all the songs by AC/DC, here's what albums they were featured on:

1. Shoot to Thrill (From "Back in Black")
2. Rock 'N' Roll Damnation (from "Powerage")
3. Guns for Hire (from "Flick Of The Switch")
4. Cold Hearted Man (from "Backtracks")
5. Back in Black (from "Back in Black")
6. Thunderstruck (from "The Razor's Edge")
7. If You Want Blood (You've Got It) (from "Highway To Hell")
8. Evil Walks (from "For Those About To Rock")
9. T.N.T. (from "High Voltage")
10. Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be (from "Let There Be Rock")
11. Have a Drink on Me (from "Back in Black")
12. The Razor's Edge (from "The Razor's Edge")
13. Let There Be Rock (from "Let There Be Rock")
14. War Machine (from "Black Ice")
15. Highway to Hell (from "Highway to Hell")

If you keeping count that's 6 cuts for Bon Scott and 9 for Brian Johnson.
3 tracks from "Back in Black" and 2 from "The Razor's Edge, "Highway To Hell" & "Let There Be Rock".
Studio Albums with no tracks represented: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",'74 Jailbreak", "Fly on The Wall","Blow Up Your Video", "Ballbreaker", & "Stiff Upper Lip".

At least this soundtrack covers a broader spectrum than their last soundtrack offering, "Maximum Overdrive" which featured 2 tracks from "Back in Black", 2 from "Fly on The Wall", 1 each from "Dirty Deeds" & "For Those About to Rock", plus 2 new instrumentals and the lone new track, "Who Made Who". At least the two soundtracks didn't copy songs, so that's a good thing.
The only thing I was hoping for was at least one new track, but no luck. ENJOY!

this is a particularly good cd for people who aren't too familiar with ac/dc, since you get songs from both brian johnson and bon scott. current fans of ac/dc will already have all these songs, but it's still great to have them again. it's also nice that songs that don't get as much airplay like "evil walks" or "guns for hire" are on here as well. if only they could have found a place for "hells bells" in the movie...

oh yeah, and the dvd rocks too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for newbies, practically worthless for everyone else, May 10, 2010
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
I've never been a huge fan of AC/DC, and seeing a selection of some of the band's most well-known songs re-packaged as a soundtrack to Iron Man 2 may come off as being little more than a quick cash-in for all parties involved, but for newbie listeners to the band, the Iron Man 2 soundtrack is a worthwhile enough endeavor. The Iron Man 2 soundtrack features such AC/DC staples as "T.N.T.", "Back in Black", "Shoot to Thrill", "Highway to Hell", and more besides, along with a bonus DVD and booklet featuring band pics and stills from the Iron Man 2 movie. All things considered, there is nothing here that any fan of AC/DC hasn't seen plenty of times before, and won't see plenty more further on down the road. Still, for new or young listeners to the band wondering just what is this long-lasting thing called AC/DC, the Iron Man 2 soundtrack is a worthwhile enough endeavor as a compilation piece to set them in the right direction of discovering the rest of the band's catalogue. For everyone else who has enjoyed these tracks time and time again though, the Iron Man 2 soundtrack is practically worthless.

2.0 out of 5 stars I hope this "non-soundtrack" CD does not start a trend, June 1, 2010
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
Now don't get me wrong. I am a fan of both Iron Man movies, having enjoyed them tremendously after seeing them in theaters, not on computers or bootlegs. And I am a big AC/DC fan, having bought most of their CD's, DVD's and concert tickets. But calling this THING a soundtrack album is an example of bait-and-switch, to say the least. I was excited about seeing the sequel, which I believed would contain a bundle of AC/DC tracks. Stephen King tried it years ago, loading his "Maximum Overdrive" with AC/DC songs, so I thought Jon Favreau would go one better, since his track record as a director far surpasses King's (as King would admit). I never left the theater for a snack or mid-movie bathroom break and, I admit, I no longer take notes when watching a movie, not since I retired from review writing. But I made an informal count of AC/DC songs, and I came up with two. I think I noticed the Clash and Queen, too, but neither of their songs is on the CD. And, unless they ran a dozen songs while I was exiting during the closing credits, very very very few of these AC/DC greatest hits was included in the movie. If people had trouble obtaining "real soundtrack albums" in the past, as I have seen, reading people's online reviews, they will have an even worse time in the future if movie companies are allowed to slap movie titles on the front of CD's that have little, if any, resemblance to the music that accompanied the motion pictures themselves. Does anyone else agree or have an explanation, other than the neverending chase of consumer dollars?

4.0 out of 5 stars No new material nice collection of tunes...., April 24, 2010

I'd have to admitt I already own all of these songs, but I've gotten drawn in a bit with the franchise hype to the movie. It is a great collection on one cd and came with a dvd too! The booklet is nice, if you are into ac/dc there is really nothing new in it you will not already know. At $9.99 no tax and free shipping I indulged myself. If you are new to ac/dc it would be a great first or second cd as it has many of their old-standards that have made them famous and will make you want to buy more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Hero Rock and Roll, July 7, 2011
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
AC/DC have studiously avoided releasing any kind of best of or greatest hits albums, much to the consternation of many a record executive. In fact, at the time of this posting, they remain one of the last remaining holdouts among the major bands to refuse to put their songs on download sites. Which makes their decision to release their songs as a companion to "Iron Man 2" as close to an ersatz best of than "Who Made Who" (the soundtrack to superfan Stephen King's "Maximum Overdrive" flick) was in 1986.

The good thing about the "Iron Man 2" soundtrack is that AC/DC have been steadily making albums since "Who Made Who," and that was when releases were still being created with 12 inch vinyl in mind. Also, at the time of "Who made Who," AC/DC were at a creative stall with the albums "Fly On The Wall" and "Flick of The Switch." They regained their momentum for the next set of albums including "Razor's Edge" and "Black Ice." That gave the man at Marvel over two more decades of Angus, Malcolm, Bon and Brian to pick from, along with all that extra space on CD to fill.

The payoff is pretty darn good. That divides up into 6 cuts for Bon Scott and 9 for Brian Johnson. Amazingly, there are no crossovers from "Who Made Who" and that leaves off some obvious favorites like "For Those About to Rock" and "You Shook Me All Night Long." There are still plenty of rocking staples to be found here, ala "T.N.T.," "Thunderstruck," "Highway To Hell" and "Back In Black." But there's also a few picks that defy expectations, like "Cold Hearted Man's" first showing on a proper AC/DC single disc, or "War Machine" from "Black Ice." The riffage is heavy and the aim is hard.

Given that "Iron Man 2" is a movie that runs mostly on explosion and testosterone, that meant that such efforts as "Caught With Your Pants Down," "Big Balls," "Sink The Pink" or other sophomoric jokes were passed over in favor of "Shoot To Thrill," "Thunderstruck" or other combat ready guitar blasters. It centers the CD and gives it, even with the shuffling of songs between Brian Johnson and Bon Scott, a feeling of cohesion. After all, AC/DC has a rep for being ballbusting hard rockers, and this riff-tastic package flies right to the heart of that assertion. Perfect for road trips or keggers, AC/DC's "Iron Man 2" makes an excellent bookmark into the band's almost 40 years of rocking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, December 31, 2010
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
This is a great set - containing an audio CD with fifteen AC/DC tracks, and a DVD with nine live tracks plus a "making of" the Shoot To Thrill video. It really is a great set - you can listen to the CD in the car, or play the DVD and see the band actually performing. I think it sounds great! I have two monitors on my computer, and it was nice to have the DVD playing on the one screen (and screaming in my headphones!), while I work on the other screen.

Now, a lot of people complain that this is not actually a soundtrack of the movie Iron Man 2. Well, that's true. If you are looking for that soundtrack, keep looking. But, if you want a great AC/DC set, then this is for you.

By the way, I forgot to mention, it comes in a great booklet/disc holder. Very nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars AC/DC Rules ! Great compilation, but not a movie soundtrack..., August 16, 2010

It's a great compilation of great AC/DC music of all times. A must have in the AC/DC collector's list. The iron man iconography helps to sales, but in this case is innecessary. It only makes sense because the songs are part of the film, but without it the disc would still be an excellent collection of tracks from AC / DC. Is true, it's a new compilation of old songs, but it is a very good selection of classic AC/DC songs, and not so classics like Cold Hearted Man but just as good!

The DVD has great performances, and for me the video of "Highway to Hell", recorded in Buenos Aires in las December is the perfect example of how all hard rock shows should be !! I was personally in that audience and it was a really striking good concert, and the video is not far behind.

I hope these comments will be helpful. Greetings from Uruguay !

3.0 out of 5 stars Confounding, but hard to criticize it., November 2, 2011
By
The Scenario (Roseville, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
An odd compilation, to be sure. Bona fide hits like "Back In Black", "Thunderstruck", "T.N.T.", "Let There Be Rock", "Shoot To Thrill" and "Highway To Hell" share space with fan favorites like "Rock N' Roll Damnation", "If You Want Blood", and "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be". Beyond that, it's head-scratchers like "Evil Walks" and "The Razors Edge". Songs like the aforementioned "Shoot To Thrill", "War Machine" and the under-rated "Guns For Hire" seem to have been picked because their themes tie in directly with the movie, but then that mentality doesn't explain why "Have A Drink On Me" is here, unless they're trying to make reference to Tony Stark's emerging alcoholism (which was touched on in the first movie, not so much the second). And "Cold Hearted Man" seems to be here solely to have a U.S. fan-baiting rarity on board for anyone who didn't wan to plunk down the money for the hefty "Backtracks" the previous year (the song also appears on the Austrailan version of "Powerage").

Still, if you're on the fence about AC/DC and want a good sampler of their work, pick this up, and in fact if you throw in "Who Made Who" from 1986 (none of the songs from which are repeated here), you actually have a pretty fair representation of their greatest hits from then to now (since the band adamantly refuses to release best-of compilations), along with the requisite stragglers.
