Iron Man Mark III Armor Model Kit

A very accurate kit of the Mark III armor as seen in the film... not surprising, as the molds were cut using the digital data used to create the CG suit by Industrial Light & Magic. The kit's very sturdy, with solid "I-beam" shaped bars used to connect the subassemblies. These will prove a drawback if you plan to cut up and repose the kit... best to leave them out in that case. The eyes, chest RT and repulsors are not molded in clear plastic, so they would need to be drilled out and clear lenses fabricated if you wish the light the model. There is some putty work needed on some seams if you want a better match to the filming suit, but they're minor enough that you'll have a very nice display piece even if you choose to skip that step.

For the money and if your not looking for exacting detail this is a fine static model for display. But if your an above average builder this model can be made to look just like the movie costume with lights. I purchased 2 of these models so that one could be made into a battle damaged version and the other is being completely reworked with moving arms, legs, torso and working lights for a more action style pose. If your an Iron Man fan this is one for your collection.

I read some online reviews about the Iron Man kit, so I knew what I was expecting. The issues can be summed up as follows:

The pose chosen is very static.

The joints are not easily reposable.

The model is not designed to be lit.

But that should not prevent anyone from buying it. It looks like the subject and will be nice display piece when completed.

This is a very attractive kit. The (full colour!) instructions show the parts molded in a tan colour, but my kit was dark red. In any event, there was great attention to detail scribed in the plastic, especially in the front and back torso pieces. The kit would certainly benefit from lighting the eyes and chest piece, but one could still follow the kit's instructions of painting those areas white and produce an attractive model. The kit comes with a beautiful base of what looks like industrial scrap metal piled on two gears, the smaller of which has "Iron Man" in bold relief. The instructions also give a good painting guide for the kit, and the full colour pictures really helps define what gets painted what colour. Very helpful.

The only qualms I have with this kit is the pose of Iron Man himself. It's very... static. It's just him standing passively, arms at his side. It would have been nice to see something more dramatic suggesting action. Still, this is an excellent kit and highly recommended for modellers of all skill levels.
