Terrible,

This review is from: Iron Man Vs. Whiplash (Iron Man (Marvel Quality)) (Paperback)
This an absolutely abysmal book. Now I know that this was just put out to tie into the release of Iron Man 2. But that' no excuse for how bad this is. The dialogue is terrible the plot makes no sense. And the continuity is all over the place. Now continuity wouldn't be a problem if they just left it ambiguous where it takes place but it makes certain differences to other comics that make it impossible for this to exist in continuity. Now the BIGGEST flaw is the how they wasted what could have been an awesome story. Now the whole point of this was to make a new Whiplash like the movie. Now in the movie his name is Ivan Vanko son of Anton Vanko. Now Anton Vanko in the comics was the original Crimson Dynamo. In here we are treated to a completely new character named Anton Vanko who's father is Igor Vanko and has literally NOTHING to do with the original Crimson Dynamo OR Whiplash for that matter. They come up with this whole contrived plot for creating the new Whiplash. But the comics pretty much already gave a great origin story. The original Anton Vanko tried to kill Tony Stark but then was was lied to and convinced by Tony that the Russian government that he worked for wanted him dead. So he changed sides. Then the government had him killed for switching sides. Now it wouldn't take much of a writer to bring Ivan Vanko in as the son of that Anton Vanko wanting vengeance for Tony being responsible for his death. I mean come on everything is basically handed to you to make an at least passable story. But instead we get this just god awful mess. As an aside while I do like the design for the new Whiplash I HATE his whips not having handles. Without handles those aren't whips they're tentacles. |
