4.0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected
My security concern is primarily that I tend to lose things. Thus I wanted excellent protection against a random person finding my flash drive. I feel confident that ironkey provides that.

I don't use it on any computers that might have keyboard password sniffers, though I see how a virtual keyboard might be a good idea. I don't really know much about security...

My security concern is primarily that I tend to lose things. Thus I wanted excellent protection against a random person finding my flash drive. I feel confident that ironkey provides that.

I don't use it on any computers that might have keyboard password sniffers, though I see how a virtual keyboard might be a good idea. I don't really know much about security so I can't critique their malware protection.

I considered buying a cheap flash drive and installing truecrypt, but decided against it. I wasn't prepared to deal with a fussy solution that may require tweaking for each computer I use; I wanted something that works easily and reliably.

As of december 2008, you still need to initialize your ironkey on a windows computer. Once you've done that, it runs on Mac and Linux perfectly.

My only complaint is that the cap isn't attached at all to the body of the device, nor does the cap have a landyard hole so it might be secured. If the cap is lost, all that fancy waterproofing is shot. Here's hoping I manage to hold on to mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Expecting, March 22, 2008
This review is from: IronKey Personal 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
I was more than pleased with the Ironkey. I work in legal investigations and I feel very comfortable transporting files back and forth from my office to use on any computer I come across. I downloaded OpenOffice in case the computer I use doesn't have MS Word and and I THINK I can download my MS OFFICE onto the key but haven't experimented yet.

The secured web access has been fantastic although I do notice a slight slowdown on the loading of web pages...not a big deal. The only drawback is occasionally opening up Google in french...one of the drawbacks of the secured network is that the sites you are on think you're logging in from another country.

The password saving feature is awesome and its good to finally have a place to have all my passwords backed up.

Sure you can have a basic, plain old flash drive...but why?

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME, December 20, 2008
This review is from: IronKey Personal 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
this is the same device we use on out government PC's, very secure. Vista does not like to have it pulled out without stoppig the device, it crashes (blue screen) my systems. It is also seen as a DVD drive when booting, if you have your PC set to look at drives, it will hang on boot up, make sure you remove the device prior to booting PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Centralized password management, secure file storage AND it looks cool, May 8, 2009
By
This review is from: IronKey Personal 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
I purchased my first Iron Key, the 2MB model, on a lark. It seemed 'way cool' - military grade encryption in a brushed metal finish... I was like a kid on December 23rd while I was waiting for it to arrive. It did not disappoint.

The key features:
1 - Uncrackable, even with an electron microscope. Your files will be secure on this device, period. Rather than keep any personal files on my work computer, I leave them on the Iron Key and access them from there.

2 - Centralized password management. If you're like me, you have online accounts at dozens of places - banks, credit card companies, retailers, social networking, etc. It's insane to use the same username/password combination at all these sites, because if one site has a security flaw, hackers can get your username and password and then use that to go after your accounts on the other sites. Unfortunately, I can only remember so many passwords, and I don't like to keep a written list. The Iron Key solves that problem by giving you a centralized password management system. All you need to remember is the password for the Iron Key.

3 - If you lose it, you can still recover your data IF you were smart enough to back it up. I have recovered data from 3 lost Iron Keys (just once with my own key). All you do is insert the new drive, point it to your backup file, enter the password used to encrypt the backup, and press enter. In a few minutes, your bookmarks, passwords and files are all recovered. The only problem I have with the backup is that it shows the individual files in the backup, so if you have a file named 'Current Resume', it's available for anyone with access to the backup to see - though the contents of the file are completely inaccessable.

We have upgraded people from the 2GB to the 4GB to the 8GB as needed. All of these devices are worth the investment if you take security and privacy at all seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secure and reliable flash drive, November 20, 2007
This review is from: IronKey Personal 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
I purchased this drive 3 weeks ago to replace my semi-secure U3 drive. While the speed of the device is somewhat less than the max rated speed as advertised (at least on my 3 primary systems), it is every bit as secure as advertised and works very well on both XP and Vista (it clearly stated that it is NOT supported on Mac's, though a beta Mac client is available). As previously mentioned, the support forum is great. You also have the ability to securely back up your drive to a local PC---the backup is encrypted and secure as well.

This is a must have device for professionals who need to ensure the confidentiality of customer or business information, or the individual who makes regular use of a thumb drive for password storage, or personal or financial information storage.

I have purchased my second IronKey Secure flash drive. They are everything claimed, and more. Good tech support (through forum - all that's needed), responsive staff, great flash drive, durable, wonderful security. Everything I wanted. I'm replacing my Iomega Zip Drives with these handier, more dependable, more secure products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great encrypted storage, but..., April 6, 2010

This review is from: IronKey Personal 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
This is wonderful encrypted thumbdrive. If you are a competent tech user looking for 2GB of very secure portable storage that will run on Mac, Windows and Linux this is the thumb drive for you. It is a bit complicated to use and thus I would not recommend it to less savvy users.

The portable applications / trusted Tor system are a little harder to recommend. First the trusted Tor network access is only possible on a windows system. The secure internet connection proxy cannot be accessed (even if you are willing to use a native copy of Firefox/other browser) from Mac OS or Linux. If you are on windows it is easy to configure another browser to connect to the local Tor proxy if you don't want to use the portable copy of firefox.

The secure applications only work on Windows and do so poorly. I found they often conflicted with native applications in unexpected ways and were difficult to keep updated. I have never had this problem with Portable Apps run from traditional thumbdrives.

Overall I'm didn't really care about the applications. I'm very happy with the encrypted storage and a little disappointed that I can't connect to the private Tor service from other OSs.

These are a little expensive... but they are solid metal, work well and are heavily encrypted.

I've used three high security USB drives and this one seems the most secure in every way. Its interface is a bit fancier then many others, and its speed is not as fast, but it works exactly as advertised.

And I cant really put a price on keeping very personal data secure.

I hope to never have to tell you whether or not the self destruct feature works. =)
