Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Ironclads: The Monitor and the Merrimac tells the story of two astonishing vessels that fought the most memorable naval battle of the Civil War and revolutionized maritime warfare. Noted experts discuss how the two distinctive ships came to be built and how they influenced later fighting craft. The designs for the revolutionary ships are explained using original blueprints, a sample of the protective armor from the Merrimac and the actual builder's model used in the construction of the Monitor. A comprehensive collection of period prints, etchings, photographs and paintings recreates the first battle between iron ships. The half-hour program concludes with dramatic undersea images of the Monitor now resting on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Narrated by Edwin Newman, former network news correspondent, presidential debate moderator and author. Period and original music by two-time Grammy Award-winner Jon Carroll.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEFORE "GETTYSBURG," THERE WAS "IRONCLADS!", July 28, 2003
By
Steven Hancock (Winston Salem, NC United States) - See all my reviews
Although this film will never reach the popularity that "Gettysburg" and it's prequel "Gods and Generals" have achieved, "Ironclads" is still a worthy addition to anyone's library of Civil War films. The battle scenes between the Ironclad warships U.S.S. Monitor and C.S.S. Virginia (built on top of the captured remains of the U.S.S. Merrimac) are awesome to behold, and the acting and costuming are top notch. I hope that they release it on DVD soon! Grade: A+

I liked this movie despite the cheesy, tacked on love story. The battle scene at the end is great and mostly historically accurate- when you finally get there. This movie is for Civil War buffs only.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good history despite the flaws., April 28, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Definitely a flawed movie, particularly the stock love story. But the scenes about the construction and especially the battle scenes more than make up for it. The special effects are not going to impress you. But considering this is a made for TV movie they are quite acceptable.
