I spent a long time making the decision to buy a IronKey Personal D200 8GB USB thumb drive and I'm happy I did. First things first - if security is not a concern then this is not the thumb drive for you. You can get a cheap USB thumb drive for a fraction of the cost. My favorite cheap alternative is the Kingston Digital 8 GB USB 2.0 Hi-speed Datatraveler Flash Drive DT101G2/8GBZ, Red. But if security is a concern then read on...

The IronKey thumb drives work flawlessly on Windows, Mac, and Linux. If you're a frequent traveler who doesn't always travel with their own equipment or if you have different platforms/OS at work and at home then this is an important consideration. For me, personally, a thumb drive that didn't have cross-platform security features would be useless.

All of the encryption is handled on the drive itself in Hardware (you can read about the technical details on IronKey's website) so nothing is transferred to the host PC and that makes it less vulnerable to attacks. This may not sound like a big deal but google "secure usb memory hacked" and read some of the stuff you find. The IronKey drives are FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified. Most of the competitors seem to be level 1 or level 2 certified. Level 3 adds requirements for preventing access to the cryptographic secrets held within the module.

It's well-built and waterproof so it should stand up well in physically demanding environments (like your pockets). It self-destructs after 10 failed attempts so you can be pretty sure your data is safe. And when I say self destruct I really do mean that. It's not usable at all and you'll have to buy a new one to replace it. I think the Basic model may offer a reset option instead but I'm not 100% sure.

Ironkey offers a couple of different models the Basic and the Personal and each comes in a D and S variant. The S has SLC Flash Memory while the D has MLC Flash Memory. SLC Flash is faster, will last longer, and has a wider operating temperature. For consumer use and better value the D variants seem to be perfectly fine.

The Personal and the Basic are identical except for some extra software that is available for use on the Personal on Windows only. These include programs for:

-Support for using the Ironkey as one of the factors for VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP). If you've used an RSA SecureID token then you're familiar with the process. Companies like Geico, eBay, Paypal, T-Mobile, AOL, and others support VIP. The list isn't huge but hopefully it'll keep growing.
-A portable installation of Firefox so that you don't leave any traces on the host computer.
-IronKey Identity Manager which is a local program that manages passwords. (Like Keepass or Roboform)
-IronKey Secure Sessions (an IronKey fork of Tor anonymizer which uses IronKey private servers) for use with the onboard Firefox. It's free for the first year.

Overall I couldn't be more pleased. I was evaluating the possibility of finding a drive with biometric (fingerprint) support but they seemed to be either too expensive, too flaky/unreliable/gimmicky or both.

The product arrived quickly. I have been using it now for about 2-3 weeks. It is very sturdy and very secure. I noticed when I plugged in the USB drive to see what was on it before the security kicked, all you see is the 90 MB boot partition. You don't see anything with the 7GB volume. Mounting the secure/protected volume is a little slow.

I like the secure apps that come with. It's a little pricy, but for the durability and security I think it is worth it.

I like my IronKey D200 8 GIG flash drive a lot.

The first think you will notice is that it is heavier than other flash drives. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The 2 key ring holes are drilled through the corners of the heavy duty case and look like they will NEVER fail like my old SanDisk Cruzer did. The holes are large enough for the detachable key ring device I have (also called a valet key ring).

The removable unattached cover for the USB connection is a bit of a concern but given the reputation for reliability of the unit it's minor.

I REALLY like the self destruct concept (after 10 invald tries) after loosing my keys at the theater with my old flash drive attached. I got them back but the entire time I worried about someone running a password cracker on it to get to my password repository.

Do NOT upgrade your built in Firefox browser or else your auto-login ability using the Ironkey Identity Manager will not work. If you accidently do that just rename your Firefox directories in your secure folder then reopen Firefox from the menu. That will reinstall the default browser.

The only other problem I've had is it wouldn't work on my laptop that I use 90% of the time. My ordeal along with the debug process and solution is listed below.

After setting up my IronKey D200 on my desktop computer it wouldn't work on my laptop computer. It kept saying "There was a problem accessing your IronKey drive (secure volume)" and I couldn't do anything with it after that. It wouldn't even let me re-format the drive. It worked fine on our desktop computer and my wife's laptop. All computers are Dells with Windows 7 operating system.

Ironkey support basically washed their hands of it when I told them it worked on other computers (even after I begged them for a process on HOW I could debug this issue). That's the reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

So, I booted my laptop in Safe mode and the IronKey worked fine. That told me that it was some kind of software blocking my IronKey.

My niece came to the rescue with the Microsoft Knowlege Base article #929135 ([...]). That lead gave me the debug process using "MSConfig" that I needed to solve my issue.

First I worked my way through disabling all the non-Microsoft services then through all the Startups by Manufacturer. The whole process took a couple of hours.

The culprit was "Umonit.exe" which is a USB port monitor of some kind. I have no idea what installed it. I'd used other flash drives with encryption before with no problem. Just not an IronKey.

The "UMonit" program is not listed in my Start/Startup folder but if I disable it in MSconfig my IronKey works just fine.

Startup Item description: ChangeIcon Application
Manufacturer: Unknown
Command: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Umonit.exe
Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Run
