4.0 out of 5 stars going strong and holding the suspense...
Well, I bought it the second day it was released and had it finished, in a few hours. That's the great thing if you have a few hours you've finished the book, that's also the sad thing... now I have to wait for book 5 til Sept.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear... What a dissapointment!
This book was ok. But, really. This book was way too short, and the series is getting worse each time. Mallory just gets trapped in this weird coffin thing for the Guide.... you know, like an exchange. But I really don't want to find out what is going to happen next. Practically, the only part you might want to read, is the last few chapters. All you find out of this...

Well, I bought it the second day it was released and had it finished, in a few hours. That's the great thing if you have a few hours you've finished the book, that's also the sad thing... now I have to wait for book 5 til Sept.

This series is fun and charming and exciting, regaurdless your age. I teach school and don't always make time for myself. These books are perfect fits into a hectic day and the small amounts of time I save for myself. Since that time is cherished I like making the most of it and Spiderwick books fit into my precious time ... so they have to be good for me, to recommend them.

Grandma's do you want a fun read that is as exciting as Harry Potter, that will impress your grandkids and help them remember your activities, something you can do in a few short hours together. This is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The End Is Near, December 7, 2005

(REAL NAME)
Things have been quiet for the Grace children ever since they tricked a group of nefarious faeries a few weeks ago. But when you're a resident of the Spiderwick Estate, and surrounded by various forms of mythical creatures, things can never stay quiet for long. And they don't. Which is quite evident, when Jared runs into a menacing shape-shifter that has taken on his characteristics, at Mallory's fencing match. But before Simon and Jared can figure out who the shape-shifter truly is, or inform Mallory about the mysterious character, she disappears - kidnapped, apparently. In an attempt to save their sister before something terrible happens to her, Simon and Jared embark on a journey into a local quarry, where they soon end up prisoners of some very strange characters, and find Mallory wearing something very strange...a dress.

With each book in the SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES series that I read, I become a bigger and bigger fan of the Grace children. The marvelous adventures they take part in throughout each installment are enthralling, and keep the reader on the edge of their seat; while the spectacular illustrations serve as eye candy for the detail oriented art-lovers. While each book in the series has featured a mixture of dark and light storylines, THE IRONWOOD TREE features the darkest storyline thus far in the series, yet also includes the most detail of what is going on within the walls of the quarry. Overall, THE IRONWOOD TREE is an enchanting story that cannot be missed by those who have read the previous books in the series, as it sets the pace for the last installment, THE WRATH OF MULGARATH.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Spiderwick chronicles (The Iron Wood Tree), October 26, 2005
A Kid's Review
This book is about two brothers and there sister. There sister, Mallory gets stollen by elfs of the iron wood tree. She is put into a glass case and that that makes her never age. So her two brothers, Simon and Jared try to save her and they do. They open the case and get her out and they return home with out being harmed. On the way out they get chased by metel dogs (every thing in the iron wood tree place is made of metal.) But they make it home.
I think all poeple would like this book because its about a mystery and you can relate in some ways. You can also imigine what happening in the story too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice development of young characters, October 6, 2005
This volume is almost a Snow White story, except here the girl's twin brothers are her rescuers and the dwarves are the villians.

I especially enjoyed this book, because being female, I like to see strong female characters presented for young readers. I also like seeing children come to appreciate their sibbling's abilities and value. The book also devels however lightly with the issue of growing up and with not wanting to compete with someone you like.

The plot is very active--not that the others weren't. It carries the reader through the adventure and sets up the tension for the final volume, making it very evident that they are all of a whole fabric.

Again, the book is very nicely bound, the illustrations are very nice, and the price is reasonable enough that it may be easily added to a child's own library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure--- Review by Ramsie, December 19, 2004
A Kid's Review
If you like adventure then this book would be really interesting. These three kids, Malory,Jared & Simon, always go on adventures because everyone wants the guide. The guide is a book that tells you everything you need to know about dwarfs, fairys, goblins etc... Spiderwick is a great adventure. I hope they come out with the fifth and sixth book.

What is going to happen next to the Grace kids? I love the drawings and the letter from Jared's school. This is my favorite series ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading up to an exciting ending, April 19, 2004
By
Kelli (Somewhere out west) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent book that is leading up to an exciting last book. I'm looking forward to the ending. It's nice to see what lengths the boys will go to to save their sister, even if it means Jared getting in worse trouble with his mother (which he only got into in the first place trying to stop someone from stealing from Mallory). Excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars In Which a Most Horrible Betrayal Occurs, June 23, 2004
In the most exciting installment yet, the children are taken underground to the Dwarf kingdom. One thing that resonated with me while reading the book was that Dwarves are often mentioned as skilled craftsmen, but there is rarely anything to show just exactly how skilled they are (there are notable exceptions: see Tolkien). I was fascinated with the description of the lock on the cage that Simon and Jared were held in, that to create it the Dwarf had to use a hammer the size of a pin. The author's description of that particular scene, with the lock unlocking, was visceral and real.

Aided by the marvelous illustrations, this is also the scariest book yet. Mulgarath is truly a frightful looking creature, and the ending reveals a most terrible betrayal, which spells certain disaster for the children - and the world - unless the children can think back to "what has gone before". The author knocks us over the head, just in case we missed it, with some considerable foreshadowing by leaving a portrait blacked out - a mysterious hero who may come and save the day in the next book.

It's a shame Mulgarath wasn't introduced earlier. He seems like a highly workable character, but I believe that we will see MUCH of him in the final book, aptly titled "The Wrath of Mulgarath".

Frankly, I can't wait. I wish I hadn't started reading these books until all of them were published!
