We are Japanese living in the US. When my friend who recently traveled Russia showed us this movie, we found it extremely enjoyable, but it was difficult for us to follow the speed of English subtitle running. So we decided to purchase one for ourselves so that we would be able to catch up the portions we missed before.
To our great surprise, the one we purchased from Amazon has Japanese subtitle besides English! We had never expected that the Russian movie purchased in America had Japanese subtitle, and this time, we could follow all the dialogues without any difficulties. Now we can say that this is not a mere comedy. We are amazed that the dialogues, as well as those romantic ballades, are full of poetic beauty and philosophical thoughts. My friend in Russia says that lots of the phrases in this movie became proverbs in Russia. No wonder! I wish I could purchase a DVD of "Ballad of Siberia," an old Soviet movie, with English and Japanese subtitles!

There are only two types of Russians - those that love this movie and those that adore it. Wonderful movie, though the format of this disk does not allow for subtitles when played on my laptop. I have yet to try on a DVD player, but, being a Russian speaker, this is no problem for me.

You can never meet a Russian who never watched this movie. This is a love story with some humor added to it that happened at the New Year Eve. So, it is a Russian tradition to watch this movie around New Year... every year... Like Americans watch Nutcracker :-). This is GREAT movie - loved by millions! I highly recommend it!
